The one major problem I used to have with the GRO Index when I was into family history, was the quality of the material we had to use ie copies aren't always easy to read, in some cases were almost unreadable and it was sometimes necessary to check with the originals to make sure what the correct reference number should have been. Could it be that there has been a transcription error......looking through some of the FreeBMD transcripts the other day for people I've already found in church records I found a number of (at least to me) very obvious errors in the FreeBMD transcripts - not being critical of the sterling work being done, just making an observation that might well be relevant in the current case.
