My grandfather Richard Daniel Gawn (1862-1950) was a civilian writer in Portsmouth Dockyard. He was also a lifelong member of the Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows and held various senior positions in that organization. According to his obituary he was for many years a member of Portsmouth Insurance Committee. I assume that this committee would have functioned between the two World Wars prior to the introduction of government-managed social services. I've not been able to find out anything about the Committee. Does anybody have any information about it? Thanks, Peter Gawn Canada.
