    2. Hi it's about time I gave one of my walls a dusting off and try to sort it. Looking for Birth details and parents of Ann HUIT b abt 1819, father on her marriage cert was William HUIT Boatswain RN. A witness was a Mary HUIT (could be mother). Ann married Thomas HOLLIS 26 Jun 1842 Portsea, she died 4 May 1845 Portsea. The nearest I can find is 1871 census Portsea William HUIT head b abt 1787 Liverpool occ Gunner RN and Mary Wife b abt 1794 N America, Canada. Could they be the same, both in RN what's difference between Gunner and Boatswain could he have changed his trade in the RN. Suggestions wanted Bob Newell

Amazing, I wonder what his secret was? lol. Hope you get the answer you are looking for. Regards, jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. >could he have changed his trade in the RN. Suggestions wanted Highly unlikely Bob, dare I say impossible - "if" they are the same person most likely someone got it wrong on the latter entry - you know what relations are - they think they know what you do or did, but in fact have little real idea. By the time they made Gunner or Boatswain, they were usually be at an age where a change would be almost impossible ie a whole load of new skills, acquired over many years. They would both have probably spent many years achieving the status of Warrant Officer, probably with many ups and downs on the way, this at a time when structured advancement on the lower deck was still very much in its infancy and full of ups and downs, and his rating ie ORD., AB, PO etc. would depend very much on the First Lieutenant on each ship he joined in the early years of his career. For the record the PRO catalogue, http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/Default.asp as far as I can see, only includes one warrant officer with this name ADM 29/23/397 Original page number: 397 William HUIT; Rank: Boatswain; Born: [Not Given]; Age on entry: [Not Given]; Dates served: 28 February 1818-31 December 1854 and see also ADM 29/23/406 for what appears to be the same person, both B'suns. Regret they would both appear to have gone to pension (if they are two different people) before Warrant Officers were included in the Navy List, so one can't check from that angle.
