First of all thank you to the people who helped me with my last query about Greenwich pensioners. I tried to write back but got a bounce. Don't know why, but it's all cleared up now. I have now found an ancestor called Joseph PORTWAY who was the Municipal Borough Chamberlain for Portsmouth in the 1880's. Now, I know what a Royal Chamberlain does, but what would the Chamberlain for Portsmouth do? Would this have been a prestigious position? (Before that he was a Master Draper at 43 Queen Street. Might that have been living above the shop?) Does anybody have any references where I could find out more about him or this position? Thanks -- Penny Holt Victoria, British Columbia Canada
