Hi Mark, May I suggest you subscribe to the rootsweb mariners list where I think you will get answers to your questions -----Original Message----- From: Mark Ware [mailto:ware1973@tiscali.co.uk] Sent: 15 July 2005 10:09 To: ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] HMS Osborne I have just discovered that my maternal gg grandfather served on board the royal yacht HMS Osborne in 1881 as Rigger. Does anybody know of a website that can tell me both about the ship and about riggers? I have put it into google but can only find pictures of the ship. Hi Mark And if you don't wish to subscribe to the Mariners' List there was a thread on the subject of Riggers, both those serving onboard and those working in the dockyard, back in May - see: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/Mariners/2005-05 British Royal Yachts by Tony Dalton is quite interesting and has some good pictures - might be available on ILL. If you want to know what this yacht was doing around this period and you've got plenty of spare time and access to the Times on-line or on micro-film, her movements etc. are usually well documented in the almost daily Naval and Military Intelligence articles contained in that paper, but that said, ISTR this yacht spent little time going anywhere except between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, but I could be wrong. Search the archives first - as I was given a description from Leith's - but can't cut and paste it!
