Greetings I am a new subscriber to your list and I hope someone can help me with a couple of questions... I have found my 3rd great grand aunt Clara HEARD (nee ROLPH) with her musician husband James and daughter Sophia as visitors at 26 Surrey Street, Portsea. Under the street address is the notation "Who'd have thought it". The head of the family is a brewer and beerhouse keeper. Does anyone know whether this was a pub or similar named "Who'd have thought it"? or, if not, what would the annotation have meant? Secondly, is there any possibility that James was actually in two places on census night? James was born in Writtle, Essex, only a few miles fro Chelmsford. There is also a James HEARD, a bandsman, same age, born Chelmsford on "Monarch" at no 10 dock, Portsmouth Dockyard. Could it be that he actually spent the night ashore, but was recorded as being on the ship? Any thoughts would be greatfully received Thanks in advance Tony Rolfe
