I came across this person, who married my Great Grandaunt in 1889 in Portsea. William John Gunborne Mitchell Would the panel have any ideas on the origin of "Gunborne" ? Thanks -- Richard van Rooijen Can't we just take the warning labels off everything and let society's stupidity problem solve itself? A wild guess: gunborne = son of a gun = born onboard ship. Hi, I've got a few examples of this in my tree. I'm assuming it's a surname which is being used as a middle name. In my family, I have an illegitimate son (brother of my gt-grandfather) who was first called John CARTER, but eventually became known as John Carter MIDDLETON after his parents married. My Dad has the middle name Lindley, which was his mother's maiden name; my gt-grandfather was Percy Jepson LINDLEY, and I recently found out that JEPSON was his grandmother's maiden name. Hope that's useful.
