Bob, It's a long-shot but there's a death index of a Walter John Gallienne at Woolwich, Kent, June qtr 1882, approx year of birth 1863. Any chance he could have been born Walter John but just used John like so many people did/do, and joined the forces which took him to that neck of the woods? cheers, Jon
