    3. Hi David, Unfortunately he was in Ireland in 1881 so there is no census for him and in 1901 he was no longer in the army and was living in Manchester. A Military Staff Clerk is one who is usually working at a headqurters or depot rather than with a regiment. He was often quite senior, a sergeant or a Warrant Officer. Usually a census quotes the rank of regular soldiers, and if you search you can often find his regiment, although chances are that most of the officers at least were seconded from their regiments. Have you serached the 1881 and 1901 censuses?
