    1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Santa's list
    2. Here are my wishes What happened to my Great Grandfather Stephen Henry (or sometimes known as Henry Stephen)NEWELL last heard of in the 1881 census listed living and working at St Johns College Hirstpierpoint Sussex as head baker. His Mary strangely listed as a Seaman's wife and children were living in 18 Arnaud St Portsea. The last known date is on his sons marriage certificate in 1898 and is not listed as deceased. Second wish is Death of Thomas HOLLIS b 1816 IOW Last date know is 1861 Census and as his wife was listed as a Widow in the 1871 census he died between these dates but no listing found. There is no listing of him in Kingston Cemetery. His first wife was buried in Mile End Cemetery but would his second wife have laid him next to her. Regards Bob

Hi Bob, Just because he wasn't recorded as deceased didn't mean he was alive. For just one example, my wife's 2xgreat grandfather died in 1854, his daughter married in 1868, and her father was not recorded as deceased. It greatly depended if the bride or groom were asked if their father had died, or possibly, and this could be the case for your family, may have been asked, but didn't know because, as you say, he appears to be working in Sussex away from home. All the best, Jon
