Hi List Seeing that it is a bit quite I wonder if anybody can shed light on the following ancestor of mine. 1881 census - Elm Grove Oakley, Portsea, Hampshire (RG11/1159/42 pg 17) Caroline RIDER Other Born Portsmouth Age 34 Principal of Ladies School (master) 1891 census - Oakely, Elm Grove, Portsea, Portsmouth (RG12 / 872/101 pg 13 Caroline REDER (Rider) Head Single F 44 Principal of School Born Portsmouth 1901 census - 25 Elm Grove, Portsmouth (Civil Parish) (RG13/1006/30 pg 14 Schedule 95) Caroline RIDER Head Single F 54 Schoolmistress Born Portsmouth, Hants She had her two nieces Emily Rider (16) and Dorothy Rider (8) attending as pupils on this census. What I would like to know is the building still standing in Elm Grove? Is is still a school? Would there be any records I could consult about the school? What training or experience would Caroline have had to open a Ladies College? Would it have been expensive for her to set up such a college/school? I have a possible death for her in 1919 (September 1/4) age 72 at Catherington (2c 147) Thanks in anticipation for some answers Helen Sullivan Queensland Australia It is very hot - 33 and very humid!
