I have a copy of the Parish Record for this Hospital Burial Ground. Richard Cotter Purser of HMS President died in the hospital 15th March 1834 and was buried in plot "R" 19th March 1834. I have been told the headstones are now arranged around the wall of the old hospital burial ground. Question Are they still readable? Anyone doing Memorial Inscriptions, if headstone still survives anyone willng to take digital photograph. Willing to pay, cheaper than travelling from Wales. Bryan Richards
Plot R is in the Garden of Remembrance at Haslar - when we had a look round a couple of years back there were various headstones, not all against the perimeter wall. Many were unreadable. The problem, although the hospital is still open, is that the military have handed it over to the NHS Trust and we are not sure of the situation regarding access to the Garden. We had to get a pass from the military guard at the gatehouse. Are you sure that there was a headstone in the first place? It might pay you to telephone the Hospital to enquire about civilian access.
