Hi All My interests are: MALE: Samuel Male, a Carrier, came to Portsmouth around 1825 from, I think, Chidham, Sussex, when he married a Miriam or Mirian or Mira or Miriah MATTHEWS (from Chidham) in St Mary's. This is my brickwall as I still haven't managed to confirm Samuel's link to Chidham. I am descended through his son, Samuel John Matthews, b1828; Luke, b1863; Luke, b1886; Leslie Charles, b1925; all living in Portsmouth. I am researching Samuel's descendants but am particularly interested in the 20th century lot as the family seems to have gone its separate ways despite living within a stones throw of each other in the centre of Portsmouth. BUSHNELL: Jacob came to Hampshire around 1815 from Bristol when he married Lucy COLLINS in Alverstoke, his children living in Portsmouth, Alverstoke and Woolwich. Like the Males, a number of Bushnell's either ran, or lived in, pubs. Alice Emma Bushnell married Luke MALE in 1907 in St Lukes. GOBLE: Mary Ann GOBLE married Luke MALE in 1886. She was the daughter of William and Mary Ann(nee STARES) GOBLE. HATCHARD: Mary Jane HATCHARD married Samuel John Matthews MALE in 1850 in St Mary's. She was the daughter of Henry and Jane (nee BROWN) HATCHARD. WALLIS: George WALLIS married Lil MALE in 1911. He was a Portsmouth councillor and later alderman from 1935 until the mid 1960s. His sister, Elizabeth, married Lil's brother, Jack (John William) MALE. I believe that other siblings ran the fish shop in Fawcett Road for many years. I am researching all the Hampshire descendants but particulary the 20th century, the period I know least about. Any information or connections would be very much appreciated. Chris Male
