Like many families mine had a wide variety of spellings for their surname but from about 1851 they have been consistent in preferring the GAMBLEN version except where somebody wrote it wrongly. (The christening record for one of my uncles in 1900 had -in although all the other children christened at the same church are -en.) If I can start with John GAMBLEN born Titchfield in 1787 who married Jane LANDFORD born Portsea 1796.(I have never succeeded in finding anything about the LANDFORD family so any information would be particularly welcome). They married at St.Mary's Portsea on 9th.July 1821. The children I know of were John 1822, William 1827 Elizabeth Jane 1830 and Thomas 1832. John and William remained in the Alverstoke area and had large families and many descendants. Thomas married Emma COLLINS and moved to Plymouth. They had nine children and I know quite a lot about their descendants since they were my great-grandparents. Elizabeth Jane married Thomas Rickard on 26th. June 1853. He died on 19th. April 1858 but I do not know what became of her or whether there were any children. All the above had strong connections with the Royal Navy and after leaving it several worked in the Victualling Yard To go back a generation. On the 1841 census living with John, Jane and their children is Peter GAMBLIN 83 (This enumerator didn't round - very helpful) Peter appears to have been born in 1758 in Titchfield. On his Death Certificate 1st.October 1846 his occupation is given as sawyer (in H.M.D. presumably). All the above derives from census and BMD records. There is a patron submission on the IGI which says that Peter married Esther born 1766 (surname unknown) in Titchfield in 1783 and that their children were William 1783, Joseph 1786, John (above,1787),Thomas 1790, Sarah 1794, Martha 1797 and Mary baptised 4th.July 1801 and died 11th.June 1802. Is anyone in a position to confirm any of these dates?
