    3. How would I find other records for merchant seamen? There is a W Locke in the 1901 who was born in Longparish and is at the Penzance dock, vessel Number One Portsmouth, relation is Master. Johanna Locke is the wife of a merchant seaman in 1901 but he is not at home. Thanks Janet

    3. Janet, there are records in The National Archives at Kew, but those that would cover his period are not digitised. Unfortunately the registration of merchant seamen was abandoned between 1857 and 1913 so other records have to be searched. There are also records at the National maritime Museum, but again would need someone to search them I imagine. You (or someone) may be able to locate a master's certificate, for example. William Locke is in Portsmouth, Hampshire, with wife Joanna in 1891 where he is described as a bargeman; ditto in 1881. What appears to be the same person in 1871 is unmarried, working as a gardener for a retired hotel keeper, in Reigate Surrey. 3. Thanks Ian, I'm glad you think the Reigate person is my William I think that would let me assume that he is related to Joseph Locke from Longparish and that lets me go another generation back....I had hoped to get to England this year but it is still on my list for the future so I will get to the National Archives eventually...thanks On 9-Sep-08, at 3:25 PM, Ian Thirlwell wrote: > Janet, > there are records in The National Archives at Kew, but those that > would > cover his period are not digitised.
