Hi folks, I am currently in Portsmouth, and had quite a thrill today, when I was able to visit the last known residence of my great grandmother in Portsmouth. The current occupants invited us in to see the interior of the tiny home. I am wondering if any of you know where the old Portsea Union Workhouse might be? Thanks, Lynne

Hello, Reading from "The Spirit of Portsmouth" - 1. the original Portsmouth workhouse was built in 1725 in Warblington Street, 2, a few years later, Portsea built a similar institution on a site near the modern Flying Bull Lane at Landport, 3. when the two parishes of St. Mary and St. Thomas were combined into the Portsea Island Union in 1834, these were inadequate and a new Union workhouse was eventually built in 1845 in St. Mary's Road, Milton, 4.. St. Mary's Hospital evolved from the Poor Law Infirmary which was part of the original 1845 workhouse, Regards Ken Grubb Cheltenham, Glos ----- Original Message ----- From: "lynne robinson" <Lynne.Robinson@Dal.Ca> To: <eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 12:55 AM Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Portsmouth Union Workhouse > Hi folks, > > I am currently in Portsmouth, and had quite a thrill today, when I was > able to > visit the last known residence of my great grandmother in Portsmouth.
