    1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] BURNEY 1851 Census

    3. Does anyone have access to the 1851 Census for Alverstoke/Gosport? I am looking for Charles BURNEY probably born Gosport Feb 21 1796 (?) therefore aged about 55 in 1851. He married Sarah MURRAY in Alverstoke (?) May 29 1826 - no other information about her. The only child I know of, Augusta, was buried in Alverstoke July 29 1828 aged 13 months. Sarah may have died in Alverstoke in 1847. You'll see from the question marks and "maybes" why one writer entitled his article "The elusive Burneys". Charles was the third son of William BURNEY (1761-1832) founder in 1791 of the Naval Academy in Clarence Square, Gosport In his will he stated that Charles and his older brothers had already been provided for and that they therefore "shall take no beneficial interest under this my Will". I take it from this that Charles had no financial share in the Academy which, in fact, was inherited jointly by his younger brothers Henry Charles Burney (1800-1862) and Edward Burney (1816-1888). The Academy was clearly a money spinner so that Charles may have been a man of "independent means". He may have been living in 1851 at Brockhurst Lodge on the Fareham road. Thanks, Peter Gawn Sechelt, B.C., Canada.

I've had a look on Ancestry and can't find any likely suspect, although I did see his brothers and sister and families. Perhaps someone else will have better luck. Is he definitely not the Charles Burney who died in Alverstoke RD in Jun Q 1847? -- Jenny M Benson
