    3. Michael We have just checked the register for George and he isn't registered in Haslar hospital or the RN cemetery at Clayhall Road. There were 2 plain George SMITHs with no date of death shown but prior to 1883 however, neither were aged 36 and had an RM against the name, indicating Royal Marine - this suggests pre 1855 when the Royal Marines Light Infantry (RMLI) were set up as a separate unit. We have also checked Anns Hill cemetery and he isn't buried there either. Anns Hill cemetery was the municipal cemetery 1855+. The only thing we can say is you can at least rule these out.
