    1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] The Pallant in the 1880s

    3. I was intrigued by the references to 'the Pallant' as I believe my Great, Great, Great Granfather lived there in th 1880s. He moved to Havant having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the RWF. His name was Arthur Taylor and he had seen service in the Crimea. On returning from his service overseas he married a woman half his age - the daughter of a veteran - her name being 'Alma'. I believe the lived in the Pallant for a number of years. I did look for the house once - but I'm not sure where it is. I have a letter from Lady Napier to AT dated 25/2/1884 and addressed to 'Lieutenant Arthur Taylor', West Street, Havant. Living in Bristol it's not easy to visit though I do intend to have another go at some point. AT was buried in a pauper's grave in Kingston Cemetery, Portsmouth. His story can be found on my web site; http://www.curme.co.uk/crimtylr.htm Any insights would be gratefully received.
