Hello again, Many thanks to Bob and Jon for their advice. I have been using "virtual" and "books" since first logging on a month or two back. However, I logged onto the site a minute or two ago and there is a caption that says "Trial has expired". Anyone else seen this? I just registered the free trial with them and it's working fine. Jon
I can still get in, but I don't know for how long I will let you have the log on details off list Bob Newell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenneth Grubb" <kengrubb@talktalk.net> To: <eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 07, 2008 11:33 AM Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Gale Group Archive - free trial
Hello, It looks as if the free trial is finished which is a shame since I found a mass of material from the Hampshire Telegraph & Post on it regarding my Portsea line in the 19thC. Does anyone know what happens now? Are we able to subscribe to it? Does any one know , if if any photo's available of the Kings Head tavern, circa 1840. TIA. Maureen in Oz
Sorry to have come into this rather late. My email has been playing up and I have not seen the other posts relating to this, but you appear to be searching for a baptism/marriage or something? I am going to Hampshire Record Office next week and will be searching Alverstoke for some of my ancestors anyway, so would be happy to do a look up for you Bob if you don't live in the area/can't get there yourself. Let me have the details if so, and I will add it to my list :o) Tracy -----Original Message----- From: eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bob Newell Sent: 02 June 2008 18:31 To: eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Parents ofCharlesMitchellbabt1828Alverstoke Ok Jon will give it a go but Charles was born in Alverstoke so his parish record would have been there
Maureen, unless there are any old daguerrotypes around in a collection somewhere I suspect it is highly unlikely there would be any photos of the tavern from that period. This was the early days of photographic development. If you Google photography +history there will be a number of hits describing the development of the early techniques. Hi Maureen, You could find one circa 1890 to 1914 since this was the age of the postcard. Your best source would be the antique shops in OZ since there was a great trade in cards to those who had emigrated. I picked up about 50 cards showing Portsmouth scenes from a shop in Auckland NZ some years ago.. Alternatively try E Bay. Mike Waterlooville
Yes thanks Ian but just thought I would try all available avenues before going there. Was thinking more on the lines of Elizabeth, finding out info on father's occupation? Jon
Bob, you may already know but Alverstoke parish records are [also] held in the Portsmouth Record Office. Ian Bob Newell wrote: > Ok Jon will give it a go but Charles was born in Alverstoke so his parish > record would have been there >

It's the plus bit, it covers neighbouring counties to Sussex. Jon
where does Sussex come into it ----- Original Message ----- From: "jonnixey.fh" <jonnixey.fh@btinternet.com> To: <eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 02, 2008 4:51 PM Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Parents ofCharlesMitchellbabt1828Alverstoke > bob, > > Try the Sussex-Plus rootsweb list if you're not already on it, they are a > very helpful bunch! > > Jon > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT-request@rootsweb.com with the word > 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the > message -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message. bob, Try the Sussex-Plus rootsweb list if you're not already on it, they are a very helpful bunch! Jon
Just a little extra Mary is still alive in the 1861 and her son William is living with her together with a granddaughter Lydia Hambleton. Now Mary is listed as being born in Dartford which would match M165442 10 Nov 1818 Stone By Dartford Kent of a Charles MITCHELL and Mary Ann PARKHURST. Think we are getting near.
Jon you are right about a mix-up,(when is my family not) the problem I have is that in the 1841 census the father is not there and the head is Mary which could be Mary Simms but she is not born in the county so it is difficult to track her down and in the 1851 she is gone and the daughter Elizabeth is the head so no place of birth for Mary but Elizabeth was born in Bexley Kent. Now stay with me there is a marriage M165442 10 Nov 1818 Stone By Dartford Kent of a Charles MITCHELL and Mary Ann PARKHURST. Also there is a bap C130922 19 Aug 1821 Bexley Kent of an Elizabeth MITCHELL. This would tie in with the 1851 census for Elizabeth's age. But it all still boils down to the marriage details of Charles and Mary, which one is it to be. Regards your findings on the same line I don't think the other children were born in Ken as they are all listed as Gosport area in censuses.
Just to add a little more confusion still, more bapts from IGI ...all children of Charles & mary : SARAH MITCHELL 07 MAR 1819 Bexley ELIZABETH MITCHELL 19 AUG 1821 Bexley Mariann Martha Mitchell 29 JUN 1823 Bexley MARY ANN HARTHALL MITCHELL 29 JUN 1823 Bexley CHARLES THOMAS MITCHELL 06 MAR 1825 Bexley regards, Jon
