Hi Peter, There was someone some years ago who was researching the Burney family as I did some checks etc for them. I think they were from Canada or the States I got hold of a copy of a thesis written by someone in Lee-on-solent about the family an sent it to them. There was a copy at Portsmouth University as this was how I found out about its existence. It was the University who put me in touch with the author. Hope this helps, good luck with your research. regards Derek Ive Gosport --- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Gawn" <pgawn@dccnet.com> To: <eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 12, 2008 8:43 PM Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] BURNEY (1851 Census) > Thanks Jenny for your help. > I had no luck with Ancestry or other on-line look-ups. > I'm not related to the Burney family. > I'm researching the Academy, which the family owned for three generations, > and > want to determine what role if any Charles played in running it. > I have enough information about his siblings but Charles has eluded both > me > and previous researchers. > As to the Charles "of Brockhurst" who died June 13 1847 I have a > handwritten > note that he was aged 79. i.e. born 1768, too soon for the one I'm looking > for. > Unfortunately I don't have the source for this information. Hi , I am sure there is an expert who can help you retrieve your backups. I am still using Family Tree Maker version 9 on Vista and although I have had the occasional problem and the whole lot disappears I manage to get it back again. I do have masses of records which I kept in Windows Data Base format and Vista will not read these files at all. Should have stayed with my old version. I believe if they can be saved in CVS they can then be read by EXcel. Mike waterlooville
Thanks Jenny for your help. I had no luck with Ancestry or other on-line look-ups. I'm not related to the Burney family. I'm researching the Academy, which the family owned for three generations, and want to determine what role if any Charles played in running it. I have enough information about his siblings but Charles has eluded both me and previous researchers. As to the Charles "of Brockhurst" who died June 13 1847 I have a handwritten note that he was aged 79. i.e. born 1768, too soon for the one I'm looking for. Unfortunately I don't have the source for this information. At my last upgrade I lost the Burney family data & can't restore it from the backup disk because Vista won't accept backups from my version of Family Tree Maker. O, the joys of technology. I expect a boffin could figure it out but I can't. That's why I was hoping that he might just show up in the 1851 Census. Thanks again, Peter. > Peter Gawn wrote >>Does anyone have access to the 1851 Census for Alverstoke/Gosport? >> >>I am looking for Charles BURNEY probably born Gosport Feb 21 1796 (?) >>therefore aged about 55 in 1851. Hi Everyone, just thought I would post my surnames net list to see if I can catch anything NEWELL MITCHELL SMITH WATERS GALLIENNE RUFFLE FARRELL CAINS HOLLIS SIMPSON BILLINGER FERGUSON Regards Bob Newell
Hello list, apologies if I have posted this before. AUSTIN Alverstoke / Gosport. BAKER Alverstoke / Gosport DOREY Sussex / Alverstoke / Gosport I've eventually found a marriage for my GGrandparents James Robert Austin & Fanny Baker in 1915 at Portsmouth Registry Office. One of the addresses given was 'Osbourne House',Havant Street,Portsea. His occupation was given as ' Master of a Steam Launch' & ' Coxswain' at Gosport c1906. Family lore relates that he (or another close relative) was on the Lifeboats. My Grandfather ,James Henry Austin ,was born at Alverstoke in 1906 & was christened at Holy Trinity Gosport in that year. It appears that James Robert was born in Manchester c1887 & his father Henry Fogg Austin was in the Manchester Regiment & was deceased by the time of his marriage. Fanny's parents were James Baker (from Suffolk) & Elizabeth Dorey (from Funtington). Although it appears that I have only a passing interest,I would still like to find Baptisms for my grandfather's 10 siblings. Also, any other information on the siblings of James & Elizabeth Baker would be appreciated. Thanks,Bob.

Does anyone have access to the 1851 Census for Alverstoke/Gosport? I am looking for Charles BURNEY probably born Gosport Feb 21 1796 (?) therefore aged about 55 in 1851. He married Sarah MURRAY in Alverstoke (?) May 29 1826 - no other information about her. The only child I know of, Augusta, was buried in Alverstoke July 29 1828 aged 13 months. Sarah may have died in Alverstoke in 1847. You'll see from the question marks and "maybes" why one writer entitled his article "The elusive Burneys". Charles was the third son of William BURNEY (1761-1832) founder in 1791 of the Naval Academy in Clarence Square, Gosport In his will he stated that Charles and his older brothers had already been provided for and that they therefore "shall take no beneficial interest under this my Will". I take it from this that Charles had no financial share in the Academy which, in fact, was inherited jointly by his younger brothers Henry Charles Burney (1800-1862) and Edward Burney (1816-1888). The Academy was clearly a money spinner so that Charles may have been a man of "independent means". He may have been living in 1851 at Brockhurst Lodge on the Fareham road. Thanks, Peter Gawn Sechelt, B.C., Canada.
