    1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Burial - George Smith - 1871
    2. Linda & Tony
    3. Michael We have just checked the register for George and he isn't registered in Haslar hospital or the RN cemetery at Clayhall Road. There were 2 plain George SMITHs with no date of death shown but prior to 1883 however, neither were aged 36 and had an RM against the name, indicating Royal Marine - this suggests pre 1855 when the Royal Marines Light Infantry (RMLI) were set up as a separate unit. We have also checked Anns Hill cemetery and he isn't buried there either. Anns Hill cemetery was the municipal cemetery 1855+. The only thing we can say is you can at least rule these out. Linda and Tony portsmouth-gosport-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of jonnixey.fh Sent: 25 June 2008 22:24 To: eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com Burial - George Smith - 1871 There was an RN cemetery at Haslar, he could be buried there. Not sure where you would enquire for burial records though sorry. Best wishes, Jon

    3. Hello, Reading from "The Spirit of Portsmouth" - 1. the original Portsmouth workhouse was built in 1725 in Warblington Street, 2, a few years later, Portsea built a similar institution on a site near the modern Flying Bull Lane at Landport, 3. when the two parishes of St. Mary and St. Thomas were combined into the Portsea Island Union in 1834, these were inadequate and a new Union workhouse was eventually built in 1845 in St. Mary's Road, Milton, 4.. St. Mary's Hospital evolved from the Poor Law Infirmary which was part of the original 1845 workhouse, Regards Ken Grubb Cheltenham, Glos ----- Original Message ----- From: "lynne robinson" <Lynne.Robinson@Dal.Ca> To: <eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 12:55 AM Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Portsmouth Union Workhouse > Hi folks, > > I am currently in Portsmouth, and had quite a thrill today, when I was > able to > visit the last known residence of my great grandmother in Portsmouth. 1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Walter Bessant
    2. Dear List, is there anyone researching the Bessant family from Eling near Southampton? I am looking for information and perhaps a photo of Walter Bessant born 3/4/1862 at Eling. His parents were Edward Besssant and Sarah Gear. Walter joined the Isle of Wight Central Railway as an appentice between 1871 and 1881. Died 29/5/1894, aged 31, on the Island having just been promoted to train driver. If anyone has any information on his career on the railway I would be very grateful. Thanks muchly, Margaret Jessup. __________________________________________________________ Hundreds of free games from Tiscali Play - http://www.tiscali.co.uk/play
