    3. I have just subscribed to this site. The IGI files listed the marriage of Elizabeth Williams to Jeremiah Spencer on 27 Aug 1798 at the Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire, England. Is there any more information available regarding the validity of this information or the names of parents? Thanks

    3. Shay, the road is still there as far as I know. It is parallel to Deerhurst Cescent, between there and the M27. It is shown on the Fareham/Gosport street map, Estate Publications Red Book, Sixth revision. It is just off the Portsmouth versions of these maps, where the cut-off is part way along Allaway Avenue. 2. Just to remind everybody that the expression 'last ship HMS Victory' does not necessarily mean he was serving on Nelson's Flagship. This was the name given to the new Naval Barracks in Queen Street (opened in Sept 1903) that was renamed HMS Nelson in the early 70's to avoid confusion with HMS Victory (Ship). They were the final Admin HQ for men discharged from the RN at the end of their engagement or going to pension or as in this case DD (discharged dead). Mike Waterlooville

    3. Oh my!! That took me back. As a boy, I lived at 175 Laburnum Grove until 1937. No.177 was on the corner of Lyndhurst Road and had the front room converted into a little general store. I remember Mrs. Morris from when I went in for sweets. The property has now been restored to a conventional house. 1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] JAMES BARTLETT/WILLIAM BARTLETT
    2. Dear All, I seem to have hit the proverbially brick wall that I see others have when I read the emails on this site. I have the marriage certificate for James Bartlett who married Elizabeth Williams on the 11th May 1845 at the Parish Church, presumably St Mary's, Portsmouth. He is shown as being a seaman, and I believe he could have served on HMS Victory or the Royal Yacht Osborne (or Victoria and Albert) My brick wall is the father of James, who is shown on the certificate as Wm. Bartlett, occupation Shoemaker. The son's marriage would put Wm.'s date of birth around 1795 to 1800. There are a number of William's who married around 1820 in Portsmouth, and I originally believed that he married a Jane Sprake on the 6th Sept. 1819. This couple subsequently had a son named James William Robert Bartlett baptised on the 14th August 1820 at St Mary's. However there is another William Bartlett, also a shoemaker who married a Hannah Kerby at Alverstoke in 1816, and he continued to trade as a shoemaker from Queen Street, Portsmouth, until 1866 when he died, as I have the death certificate, believing this to be the other William who married Jane!!!! James Bartlett does not appear to have used his second and third christian names, which may not of course be unusual when joining the Navy, and I cannot find any record of a birth of a James to William and Hannah. I would be most grateful to anyone out there who is researching Bartlett's in Portsmouth, who might be able to solve this problem, or to anyone else who might have some helpful suggestions on which direction I should now be taking. Regards Michael

The shop business was lost to the owner due to the Depression as people could not afford to buy the meat. Would like some info or leads to find this shop if possible. Many thanks. April

    3. Hi Bob, Jan, etc. Though I cannot comment directly on your William CAINS' origins, a link to Dorset may not be unusual. My gggf Robert Joice SQUIRE married 15 Aug 1802 at Alverstoke to Martha BOUND appears to have been baptised 17 Mar 1774 in Winterborne Zelston, Dorset, as Robert Joyce SQUIRE, s/o Thomas SQUIRE and Ann SHEARING, who married 17 Jan 1762 in Winterborne Zelston. So some time between 1774 and 1802 he moved from Dorset, probably due to the dockyard expansion between 1760 and 1800 mentioned by Prince Edward in "Crown & Country". This is probably the same time frame that William CAINS could have made a similar move, as you suggested. Was William connected with the Navy Dockyard? I have no occupation for my Robert, but his son Edmund SQUIRE was a Warrant Officer in the R.N. and apparently highly regarded. He died on 12 Feb 1845 of sunstroke in Mauritius (probably should have been wearing one of the straw hats his family made for the Navy! - these details provided by his grandson, my greatuncle, Henry William Squire WILLCOCKS in a handwritten document about his family dating from about 1915.) Hope this helps Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.
