Dear Heather, I would have thought that the Barracks concerned were possibly St.George's Barracks. and that it was almost certain that they had their own church in the depot. This was not uncommon and there might even have been a church built in the grounds of the barracks. I know that Haslar Hospital had its own C of E Church in the grounds and that there was a small RC Church in part of the hospital building. I am not sure whether St George's Barracks is still standing in Gosport, but the story goes that the splendid building in Gosport with the very large windows and verandas that gave an eastern appearance to the building should have been built in India. Apparently there were two buildings approved. One in India and the other in Gosport, but the plans were put into the wrong envelopes. Hence the mistake. Somewhere in India there must be a 'Brick Barracks' small windows and fire places. If you do not have any success with your search I suggest that you try the M.O.D. Regards, Don FRASER
Hi Jenny Quite happy to take the opportunity to explain our attitude to copyright as far as the Hampshire OPC is concerned especially as there has been an incident recently where we had to put a notice on our website after another webmaster copied some of our data and placed on his website. Although the original registers are in the public domain, there are several who claim copyright including Diocesan Authorities and Record Offices alike. What we do know is that a transcription from an original source becomes the copyright of a transcriber - but this does not pass to anyone who copies an existing transcription even if the words are slightly altered. The whole concept of the OPC is to make parish register and other data freely available to family historians who are genuinely researching their own family trees. We are totally against and will not permit wholesale sections of data being reproduced whether this is for commercial use or not. We have built in a few safeguards in the transcriptions so that we will be able to identify if data is being copied. We have no objection to individual transcriptions being placed on family trees provided due acknowledgement is given as you suggest, although we would add that the name of the individual transcriber is included as per the transcription page in question. However, if the data is later published for instance on the internet or in a book, we would expect that the publisher does seek permission beforehand. We would certainly not be unreasonable in this respect. Hope this helps Linda & Tony -----Original Message----- From: eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jenny M Benson Sent: 19 August 2008 04:31 PM To: eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Hampshire OPC Upload > > Thank you to all of our volunteer transcribers - their hard work should be > appreciated by all Hampshire researchers and their copyright respected. > I am very grateful to all the researchers who transcribe for Hampshire OPC - their work is much appreciated. Please can you clarify about copyright. AS I understand it (and, of course, I may be wrong) one cannot copyright information which is in the public domain (such as BMD information) but can only copyright your own presentation of such material - ie formatting and layout. Presumably, if one aquires information from the Hampshire OPC pages at Knightroots and incorporates it into one's genealogy reports, web pages etc, with a source citation such as "Hampshire OPC at www.knightroots.co.uk, citing XYZ Church Baptismal Registers" this is quite acceptable and doesn't contravene anyone's rights? -- Jenny M Benson ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Good Afternoon Listers, I've recently discovered that one of "my lot" was born in Portsmouth around 1808 and hoped that he might have come up in someone elses tree also? He moved up to Leicester where he remained up until his passing in 1869, he worked as a framework knitter and has also come up as a shoemaker (he might have served his apprenticeship in Portsmouth?). I don't know very much more about him but any help would be gratefully received! Thanks in advance, Jason Payne
Hello David, Sorry but Rhodes Wood was from Yorkshire and was just stationed in Gosport for a while. The family then moved back to Amy's home in Lancashire. I do have a BLAKE connection in Andover! All the best Heather
Thanks, Heather. My Wood was from Cheshire, but was stationed at Gosport. He married my great great great grandmother, but she was already married. Her first husband later remarried - after having been separated from her for more than 20 years - but ended up in court charged with bigamy. He was not convicted. No Blake connection with Andover, so far as I know. Blake's such a common name and I haven't dealt with them yet. Hello Linda & Tony, Thank you once again for all your help. I have taken a look at your wonderful site and I am well impress with all the hard work that has been put into it. I have now added it to my favourites! I was not o sure about the baptisms, as I know that the family did move around a lot and not that everyone did get baptised. Many thanks Heather
Heather What else do you know about them? I have a relation who married Isaac Wood in Gosport in 1865, but don't think they had any children. He was a Marine. It was a bigamous marriage. Morning Heather we have checked St Matthew Gosport 1867-1873 and no sign of the 2 baptisms there. If they aren't in there online try checking the IGI for Alverstoke and Holy Trinity Gosport. The problem with baptisms are that they could have taken place any time from birth until adulthood and anywhere as they moved around a lot particularly when in the Services. Kind regards Linda and Tony
Hello Heather try www.knightroots.co.uk click on online transcriptions on left then G for Gosport and then Forton St John church or look for the appropriate CHU reference and you should go straight there in turn and look at the baptisms for Forton St John Gosport many of the baptisms are transcribed on our site. If not they might be in St Matthew which we haven't yet transcribed but will look for you.
