Hello June - Thanks for giving me the names of the Churches in the Landport area. I will certainly see what I can come, as the early Church recoreds are the only ones available for the early 1800's which is where I'm looking. Thanks very much for your interest. Joyce
Hello Edna - Thanks for the Isle of Wight FHS - I briefly accessed it and it looks very interesting and helpful. I will definitely read it more fully later today. Your help is appreciated. Joyce
Hello Linda and Tony, Thanks for the suggestion - unfortunately, my Charles Hayles was probably born in the early 1800's (his son was born in 1835) and, as you know, the BMD records start at 1837+. However, the direct connection for the Isle of Weight records is a useful one and I have bookmarked it. Many thanks for your interest and help. Joyce
-Try All Saints, St. Agatha's, St. Faiths or maybe the non conformist churches.---- June From: "Joyce Owen" <jjowen@sympatico.ca> To: <eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 25, 2008 12:22 AM Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Help with finding Charles Hayles > Hello June, > > Thanks for your suggestion to search the Isle of Wight area to try and > locate Charles Hayles. Hello June, Thanks for your suggestion to search the Isle of Wight area to try and locate Charles Hayles. This certainly is an excellent idea - unfortunately, I also need to find his Date of Birth, otherwise I can never be sure if I have the correct person. Many thanks for your interest and I'm hoping that somebody else will also have some ideas or supply the Church in the Landport area where Charles lived. Again, your help is appreciated. Joyce
I've been working my way through 'one of mine' who died during WW1 and in his Service Record, there is mention of him receiving the HRH Princess Mary Gift. I had no idea what it meant, so I've looked it up and thought it might be of interest. Princess Mary was the daughter of Prince George, Duke of York, who later became George V. During WW1, she visited hospitals and welfare organisations with her Mother, assisting with projects to give comfort to British servicemen and assistance to their families. One of the projects was the Princess Mary's Christmas Gift Fund, through which £100.000 worth of gifts was sent to all British soldiers and sailors for Christmas 1914. My William died Sept 1914, so the Gift was sent to his parents. Jan
A big thank you to all the kind people who replied to my question. I am very grateful! Regards, Shay
Have you thought of looking on the Isle of Wight, there were a lot of Hayles living there, some even came to Portsmouth to marry as St. Mary's Portsea was the mother church. Goog luck. Hello Don, Thank you so much for all these details concerning the barracks, a truly interesting read! and your help has been truly appreciated. I am staring to wonder that maybe the children did not get baptised as I have been unable to find any for their other children in Lancashire. Thank you once again All the best Heather

Hi Shay. Could it have been Army Service Corp ? Prior to becoming Royal Army Service Corps. I believe they have changed the name again. Before the 20th century I think they may have known as Army Commissariat . With kind regards, Seamus. Good afternoon from Toronto - I have been researching my Hales family and this has taken me from the London area to the Portsmouth area, where I need to break down the brickwall I have run into. Following is the only information I have and this was provided to me by some kind people from a micro film of St.Mary's Church, Portsea: December 13 1835 - Baptism of Samuel, son of Charles and Emma Hayles of LANDPORT - Charles was a Cordwainer by Trade. I'm reasonably certain that this is "my" Samuel Hales. It's supported by the fact that on Samuel's London marriage in 1857, he shows Charles, shoemaker, as his father - this fits the profile above. Unfortunately, the marriage certificate only indicates "of full age" for Samuel ... no help here! He also shows Portsmouth as his birthplace on various documents and censuses. Samuel died in 1892 and his age was shown as 57 - placing his birth in 1835. The only other clue on the Baptisimal certificate is that Charles Hayles was living in Landport and, as there are a lot of churches in the Portsea area, I would appreciate any help or suggestions as to which Church qould be in the Landport area. Based on Samuel's baptism in I checked out the IGI and did find the following St.Mary's baptism: Charles Wheeler Hayles - Born August 10, 1806 - Father: Charles, Mother: Mary. The only marriage I can find is for Charles Hayles and Emma Osborne in London at St.Pancras Old Church on Sept 05 1831 and this is a strong possibility, given that the Hales familuy did eventually settle in that area. I have already contacted the London Archives office to see if the marriage document is available. Unfortunately, I have not been able to definitely locate Charles Hayles and I need to find his birth date or even find anothere marriage between Charles Hayles and Emma. If anybody can offer suggestions and or any other guidance and help, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much. Regards. Joyce in a hot and sunny Toronto, Canada

It is now known as the Royal Logistics Corps. It has had a number of names throughout its over 200 year history: Royal Wagoners - Royal Wagon Corps - Royal Wagon Train - Land Transport Corps -Military Train and then in 1870 Army Service Corps, officered by members of the Commissariat, who were previously uniformed civilians.. The Army Service Corps became the Royal Army Service Corps in 1918. In 1965 the transport elements of the Corps and the Royal Engineers formed the Royal Corps of Transport and in 1993 that Corps amalgamated with the RAOC, the RPC, the ACC and the RE Postal and Courier Services to form the Royal Logistics Corps David ----- Original Message ----- From: "Timber" <894driftwood32@iinet.net.au> To: <eng-ham-portsmouth-gosport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 23, 2008 7:41 AM Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Driver ASC > Hi Shay.
