I'm Looking for more information on William Hewett born c1801 in Gosport. He married Sarah Francis c1832.I've found them in the Censuses & have traced his parents as James & Elisabeth according to the IGI. I would much appreciate confirming William's baptism & marriage. One of William & Sarah's children was Jane Hewett born in Alverstoke 1853.She married John Austin in 1871.He joined the Army & died in Manchester in 1883. Bob
Like many families mine had a wide variety of spellings for their surname but from about 1851 they have been consistent in preferring the GAMBLEN version except where somebody wrote it wrongly. (The christening record for one of my uncles in 1900 had -in although all the other children christened at the same church are -en.) If I can start with John GAMBLEN born Titchfield in 1787 who married Jane LANDFORD born Portsea 1796.(I have never succeeded in finding anything about the LANDFORD family so any information would be particularly welcome). They married at St.Mary's Portsea on 9th.July 1821. The children I know of were John 1822, William 1827 Elizabeth Jane 1830 and Thomas 1832. John and William remained in the Alverstoke area and had large families and many descendants. Thomas married Emma COLLINS and moved to Plymouth. They had nine children and I know quite a lot about their descendants since they were my great-grandparents. Elizabeth Jane married Thomas Rickard on 26th. June 1853. He died on 19th. April 1858 but I do not know what became of her or whether there were any children. All the above had strong connections with the Royal Navy and after leaving it several worked in the Victualling Yard To go back a generation. On the 1841 census living with John, Jane and their children is Peter GAMBLIN 83 (This enumerator didn't round - very helpful) Peter appears to have been born in 1758 in Titchfield. On his Death Certificate 1st.October 1846 his occupation is given as sawyer (in H.M.D. presumably). All the above derives from census and BMD records. There is a patron submission on the IGI which says that Peter married Esther born 1766 (surname unknown) in Titchfield in 1783 and that their children were William 1783, Joseph 1786, John (above,1787),Thomas 1790, Sarah 1794, Martha 1797 and Mary baptised 4th.July 1801 and died 11th.June 1802. Is anyone in a position to confirm any of these dates? I should be very pleased to hear from anyone who has an interest in these families Best wishes Alice Clarke (born Gamblen) Now living in Oakham, Rutland

Hi All My interests are: MALE: Samuel Male, a Carrier, came to Portsmouth around 1825 from, I think, Chidham, Sussex, when he married a Miriam or Mirian or Mira or Miriah MATTHEWS (from Chidham) in St Mary's. This is my brickwall as I still haven't managed to confirm Samuel's link to Chidham. I am descended through his son, Samuel John Matthews, b1828; Luke, b1863; Luke, b1886; Leslie Charles, b1925; all living in Portsmouth. I am researching Samuel's descendants but am particularly interested in the 20th century lot as the family seems to have gone its separate ways despite living within a stones throw of each other in the centre of Portsmouth. BUSHNELL: Jacob came to Hampshire around 1815 from Bristol when he married Lucy COLLINS in Alverstoke, his children living in Portsmouth, Alverstoke and Woolwich. Like the Males, a number of Bushnell's either ran, or lived in, pubs. Alice Emma Bushnell married Luke MALE in 1907 in St Lukes. GOBLE: Mary Ann GOBLE married Luke MALE in 1886. She was the daughter of William and Mary Ann(nee STARES) GOBLE. HATCHARD: Mary Jane HATCHARD married Samuel John Matthews MALE in 1850 in St Mary's. She was the daughter of Henry and Jane (nee BROWN) HATCHARD. WALLIS: George WALLIS married Lil MALE in 1911. He was a Portsmouth councillor and later alderman from 1935 until the mid 1960s. His sister, Elizabeth, married Lil's brother, Jack (John William) MALE. I believe that other siblings ran the fish shop in Fawcett Road for many years. I am researching all the Hampshire descendants but particulary the 20th century, the period I know least about. Any information or connections would be very much appreciated. Chris Male
Hi List, I am looking for the TERRY family, JOHN TERRY married SARAH UNKNOWN, they had a son HARRY TERRY , born 26 Nov.1797, Saint Thomas, Portsmouth, Hampshire, he died between 1851-1861 at Fitzroy Harbor, Ontario, Canada, in the 1851 Fitzroy Harbor , Ontario , Canada census, HARRY TERRY is listed as a Tailor.HARRY TERRY married LUCY JOHNSTON, 20 July 1817, Saint Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire, England. LUCY JOHNSTON was born about 1794, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. MARY ANN TERRY, born: 16 Jan. 1825, Saint Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire, England, she died 6 May 1861, Fitzroy, Harbor, Ontario, Canada. MARY ANN married JAMES WARK, 16 Aug. 1847, Bathurst District, Village of Fitzroy, Ontario, Canada. 2. AMELIA SARAH TERRY, born 25 Dec. 1822, Saint Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire, England. It is believed that this family is related to the famous Dame Ellen Terry, who's family was famous for acting. I would really like to find the link as well as more information of this family in Hampshire, I wonder how and where MARY ANN TERRY AND JAMES WARK met. JAMES was in Ontario in the 1851 census, 1906 Census ,James Immigrated to Canada in 1840. 1901 Census, James immigrated to Canada in 1841. I could really use some help with this family, and would appreciate any help out there. Cheryl Wark, Penticton, British Columbia, Canada

John CUMMINGS Captain 1st Garrison Battalion married Ann BOYTON of this Parish by License on 27th of October 1805 at Holy Trinity Alverstoke Gosport. Their son, John George William CUMMINGS baptised Holy Trinity 14th January 1807. This family came to Australia in 1808 on the Recovery Troop ship carrying men of the NSW Corps. Captain John CUMMINGS was the senior Officer. After many years searching, I still don't know where in England he came from. Army records for Officers speak in detail about promotion and regiment movements but don't mention origins of individuals. Still hoping for a link. Many thanks Jennifer Bantow nee CUMMINGS Geelong Australia

Hi, I'm still lurking, and if I can just wean myself off eBay, I shall be rootling around with my rellies again this winter. Here's what I have so far for Hampshire: My Dad was Reginald Wilfred WATKINS (b1917 Alverstoke), son of Frederick Walter WATKINS (b1889 Alverstoke) and Emily COOK (b1890 Forton). Fred's father was Frederick Walter WATKINS (b1860 Shrewsbury), and the big mystery is what brought him to Gosport? How did he meet his wife, Edith Maud SWEETMAN (b1861 Bemisters Lane, Gosport). Edith's parents were John SWEETMAN (b1832 Annshill, Gosport) and Frances BRISTOW from Sussex. The SWEETMAN family goes back thro John SWEETMAN (b around 1801/1806) and possibly Hugh SWEETMAN. They seem to have been butchers by trade. Emily COOK's parents were Thomas Henry COOK (b1859 Forton) and Sarah Ann BARNES (b1860 Alverstoke). Sarah's family were coal merchants and also have strong links with SAUNDERS and SIMS. Her parents were William Thomas BARNES (altho his middle name could have been James - my enduring gratitude to anyone who can unpick this puzzle) (b1836 Alverstoke), and Adelaide Ann OGBURN (b poss 1837, but was it Portsea or Alverstoke?). Hers is another family of butchers. The BARNESs go back thro William and then Cornelius, while the OGBURNS have Thomas. That's as far as I've got, as I can't afford the certificates to verify each individual and there are a lot of duplicated names. Thomas COOKs line goes back via John J and then James COOK, but they and Thomas's mother were both from outside Hampshire. My Mum was Joan Lilian HAMMOND, whose parents were William Henry HAMMOND (b1886 Forton) and Lillian Florence PROOST (b1890 Ryde IOW). The HAMMONDs were Gosport people - Henry James (b1853 Forton), Henry John (b1830 Alverstoke), Henry (b abt 104) and George (nothing known yet). The HAMMONDs married into the WESTBROOK of Droxford and also the REEVES family. Mum's gran, Sarah PAY (b1853, Forton or Harting Sx?) was the dau of William PAY (abt 1824 Petersfield) and Harriett PRIOR (b1830 Harting, Sussex). Mum's other grandparents were Auguste Henri PROOST (b1857 Paris) and Adelaide Sarah FARGE (b1854 St Pancras to Belgian ancestors). They were reputed to be great sweethearts and Auguste was a bit of a bloke from a very noble background. Turns out he may have been running ahead of the law when he came to England and probably never actually married my g'grandmother. By the time they started their family of 10 kids on the Isle of Wight, he'd already had 2 boys with his legal wife in London - even called them the same names. That bit of the family must have been completely swept under the carpet, not least because they died young in poor circumstances, one having been in prison. There are still members of the PROOST family in and around Portsmouth, two of whom have done sterling work in tracing our ancestors. Thank you if you've read as far as this. If anyone has any connections or info to help with my mysteries, do get in touch. I am compiling a database of all those who served in the Supply & Secretariat Branch of the Royal Navy on the Royal Yacht Britannia and the Royal Yacht Victoria & Albert (3). I have a list of all those who Commissioned RY Britannia in Jan 1954 and a list of those serving onboard at the end of the Westabout tour of 1963 (I was one of them). I am lacking detail such as joining dates, rank on joining and leaving and dates. Official numbers would also be very useful. The Supply & Secretariat Department numbered some 3 Officers and about 50 ratings comprising Writers, Stores Assistants, Cooks, Caterers and Stewards. Any help would be most appreciated. I have details of some 225 at the moment. Mike Hill Waterlooville
