Subject: Interests:LITTLE,TITHERADGE,CONELL,BULBICK,BOXELL,HEATHRELL,SOUTHON Hello everyone, My interests in the above names are all Portsea/Alverstoke area. Earliest was Thomas Little m Mary Connell St.Mary Portsea 16 Nov.1780. Maybe someone else has these in their tree. Brenda in Suffolk
Of the nine children of William WILLCOCKS b. 15 Dec 1802 and Elizabeth Young b. 6 Feb 1804, who marreid 1 Jan 1825 at St. Mary's Portsea, I have some if not all descendants of four of the five sons. The family comprised: 1. William Robert WILLCOCKS b. 11 Dec 1825 - this line researched down to living relatives 2. George William WILLCOCKS b. Dec 18276, bu.27 Nov 1827, St. Mary's Portsea 3. Henry John WILLCOCKS b. 16 Mar 1828 - also researched down to living relatives (my ggf) 4. Elizabeth Ann WILLCOCKS (1) b. 14 Aug 1830, probably d. bef. 3Q1837 as no records of death found, but see 9 below. 5. Samuel WILLCOCKS b. 1 Jul 1832 d. after age 73 in 1905 (laid a wreath at Trafalgar Square on 21 Oct 1905) - most lines known into 20th century but not Frederick E WILLCOCKS . 1859 Sheerness, Kent. 6. Martha WILLCOCKS b. 6 Nov 1835, believed to have died before 1837 death records started, not found in 1851 census 7. Thomas WILLCOCKS b. 3Q1838 m. Henrietta Jane WOODEN 3Q1857 Portsea, one line known down to a living cousin. 8. Mary WILLCOCKS b. 3Q1840, in 1851 census age 10 - no descendants or marriage found 9. Elizabeth Ann WILLCOCKS (2) b. 2Q1843, in 1851 census age 7 (hence not the Elizabeth Ann b. 1830) Conclusion that Elizabeth Ann (1) and Martha died is based on birth of second child with exactly the same name, which would point to a death before 1843, but no deaths of Elizabeth Ann found in BMDs between 1837 and 1843 suggests she was younger when she died. The 1841 census HO107/413/1/p20/F32 shows William (father) 38, Blacksmith, Elizabeth (mother) 40, William (son), 15, Henry 13, Thomas 3, Mary 10m, and Ann Young 70, at Nile St., Portsea (in the dockyard area.) No sign of Elizabeth Ann who should be 10, Samuel, 8, or Martha, 5. Samuel was in Conway Row, with grandparents Robert & Mary, and aunt Elizabeth, but the missing two daughters could have died before 1841 census and before death records in 1837 as mentioned above. Any clues welcome! The Young family is shown on the previous page on the same image. Any descendants of the above family are also requested to contact me. Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.
My main interest is in the surname ALBRAY, a variant spelling of ALLBERRY. This family was first found in Fareahm in the early 1840s, and later in Gosport in the late 1850's. The family originates in the Trotton and Rogate areas of Sussex. ALBRAY family members spread out from Gosport to Dorset, Leicestershire, London, Wales, and Australia during the 20th century. Henrietta ALBRAY married EDMUND ALBERY, her 2nd cousin, and raised a family in Gosport during the late 1890s and until the early part of WW1. Some connecting surnames are: PARSONS, CHILDS, HAWKINS, HARVEY, HABENS, UNIACKE, CIVIL, STEPTOE, SCOTT, FLETCHER, DAVIES, RATHMELL, YELLAND, ASPEY, LLOYD, NORSTER, CHRISTOPHER, CALLAHAN, SALMON, NIXEY, HORWOOD, CLARKE, DRAYSON, BOSS, WILLIAMS. Regards to all, Jon
COURTNEY George COURTNEY suddenly appears in Portsea in 1890s & marries MARY STEVENS/STEPHENS daughter of CHARLES & MARY STEPHENS. Where did he come from? Census says Portsmouth but no records of him prior to his marriage exist. STEVENS/STEPHENS Charles STEVENS of STEPHENS was born in Devizes in 1843 & joined the RN. Last hear of as RN pensioner in 1891 census, missing from 1901. No record of death found. Widow Mary living with daughter Elizabeth ELMES in 1901 in Landport. STONEHAM STONEHAMS ran a family bakery business 1850 onwards in Portsea. Flora Alice STONEHAM married Edward WORTHINGTON in 1890s & had 2 children George & Flora Alice. WORTHINGTON Michael WORTHINGTON married into family of Edward LAVENDER taylor. Wife maybe LYDIA LAVENDER who had two Children Robert Henry or Henry Robert & Edward WORTHINGTON. But a mystery as to who married who exactly in the family & whose children they really were. Michael WORTHINGTON died 1881 age 31 yrs in Landport. Had been in Haslar. Lydia on death cert as widow, but she didn't get a pension. LAVENDER EDWARD LAVENDER, a taylor, with children Lydia/Sarah/William/Walter living Landport, Church Path in censuses throughout c19th. Wife Elizabeth NOBES.

This name is also sometimes spelt Foisey. We have a record of his marriage at Wymering, and his subsequent descendants, but not his birth. I suspect he came from outside the area, but there is no proof. Also there is one of his sons, John Voysey, b. 1817, about whom we know very little. Margaret (in dry but cloudy Brighton)
Hi Mike, I have her (presumed?) parents and grandparents. Parents: Joseph GOODIFF and Ann GOFF, married Portsmouth 7 February 1826 Grandparents 1: Richard Goodiff and Jane CHURCHER, married Wickham 28 September 1797 Grandparents 2: James and Ann Goff, no details. There is a group of us who have been researching the Dollery side, as we all descend from John and Jane on one line or another. My own line is through their daughter Jane Sabina Dollery who was married to Edwin Abbott. She was Emily Dollery/Briggs' sister. If I have everything correct, then your wife is my 3rd cousin once removed!! This line is sketchy in my tree, with just her ancestry back to Charles and Emily, but no sibling aunts/uncles or dates. ...slight correction: the mysterious Briggs married Mary Ann as Thomas Smart BRIGGS (his father is given the same name). This was in 1852. In the 1861 census however, he is listed as Thomas SMART. This really caused confusion when searching for my gr gr grandfather Edwin ABBOTT, as the same census has him as Edwin Abbott SMART! Hello List My 2 x g-grandfather was Richard HARPER, bapt. 5 Jan 1777, Portsea. He joined the Royal Navy and, at the time of his marriage, was a "Mariner belonging to HMS Chichester". He married Sophia LILLYWHITE, of that Parish, 2 May 1799 at St.Mary's, Portsea. Some time after his marriage he settled ashore working as a Ropemaker. Apart from a short spell in London, he and Sophia spent most of their lives in the Portsmouth area. They, and their children, were in Alverstoke in 1841 and 51. The couple died in Alverstoke in (I think) 1860. Any chance of getting further back into Richard HARPER's ancestry? Or is that wishful thinking? Best wishes Frank Early South Africa
