    3. I've been for a visit today to St.John the Baptist, Boldre, New Forest to look for headstones and found that they cover a very large area.   Inside the porch is a map of the plots and just inside the main door are two folders which show alphabetically, the name of the deceased, the plot number and date of burial.   There are also several framed lists on the walls, showing recent baptisms.   It might help somebody   Jan

    2. Penny Courtney
    3. COURTNEY George COURTNEY suddenly appears in Portsea in 1890s & marries MARY STEVENS/STEPHENS daughter of CHARLES & MARY STEPHENS. Where did he come from? Census says Portsmouth but no records of him prior to his marriage exist. STEVENS/STEPHENS Charles STEVENS of STEPHENS was born in Devizes in 1843 & joined the RN. Last hear of as RN pensioner in 1891 census, missing from 1901. No record of death found. Widow Mary living with daughter Elizabeth ELMES in 1901 in Landport. STONEHAM STONEHAMS ran a family bakery business 1850 onwards in Portsea. Flora Alice STONEHAM married Edward WORTHINGTON in 1890s & had 2 children George & Flora Alice. WORTHINGTON Michael WORTHINGTON married into family of Edward LAVENDER taylor. Wife maybe LYDIA LAVENDER who had two Children Robert Henry or Henry Robert & Edward WORTHINGTON. But a mystery as to who married who exactly in the family & whose children they really were. Michael WORTHINGTON died 1881 age 31 yrs in Landport. Had been in Haslar. Lydia on death cert as widow, but she didn't get a pension. LAVENDER EDWARD LAVENDER, a taylor, with children Lydia/Sarah/William/Walter living Landport, Church Path in censuses throughout c19th. He was 51 yrs old and not to be conventional, had had six children with Maria and she had three of her own from her first marriage.   Her children Maria Ahern 1878-1906 who married John William Jerome. Harriett 1880 William 1882-1933 who married Sarah Bushnell.   Children of James and Maria. Amy 1886-1888 Minnie born Mar qtr 1890 Portsea. James born 1891/92 Portsea, possible marriage to Amy Avery. Edward 1892/93 Charles Albert born Dec qtr 1895 Portsea. Ellen born 1898/99.   This is a Portsea family and James was a seaman for many years and on the 1901 is a labourer in HM Dockyard. He was possibly a publican as well.   Any links or suggestions would be very much appreciated   Thank you

    1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Merchant Seamen
    2. Ian Thirlwell
    3. Janet, there are records in The National Archives at Kew, but those that would cover his period are not digitised. Unfortunately the registration of merchant seamen was abandoned between 1857 and 1913 so other records have to be searched. There are also records at the National maritime Museum, but again would need someone to search them I imagine. You (or someone) may be able to locate a master's certificate, for example. William Locke is in Portsmouth, Hampshire, with wife Joanna in 1891 where he is described as a bargeman; ditto in 1881. What appears to be the same person in 1871 is unmarried, working as a gardener for a retired hotel keeper, in Reigate Surrey. 1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Roll Call: DIDYMUS / HAMMOND
    2. Ali Smith (nee Hargreaves)
    3. 1. Still seeking evidence of the baptism (or any information at all) of my 3 x Gt GF James DIDYMUS (born about 1809), married Sarah BAILEY 7 Nov 1826 in St Peters Church, Titchfield. (1841-1881 census living in Sarisbury/Swanwick). I'm also still trying to forge a link between the Shedfield/Wickham Didymus' and the Sarisbury Didymus' - so any references to the surname (or variants welcome). 2. Anyone researching the HAMMOND family of Swanmore/Bishops Waltham? Looking in particular for details of Harry HAMMOND born Q2 1871 - son of Obed HAMMOND and Annie (nee PINK) of Swanmore. What happened to Harry after the 1891 census? Can only find 'Henry' HAMMOND in 1901 in Mile End, London (age and birthplace correct). Is this him? Why did he name his father as James HAMMOND on his Marriage Certificate (in 1902 to Florence THORNTON in South Action, London). (James HAMMOND was Obed's father!) Any information greatfully received. Thanks Alison Smith (nee Hargreaves), Swindon, UK

Thanks Ian, I'm glad you think the Reigate person is my William I think that would let me assume that he is related to Joseph Locke from Longparish and that lets me go another generation back....I had hoped to get to England this year but it is still on my list for the future so I will get to the National Archives eventually...thanks On 9-Sep-08, at 3:25 PM, Ian Thirlwell wrote: > Janet, > there are records in The National Archives at Kew, but those that > would > cover his period are not digitised.
