My grandparents' headstone has been there since 1904 and another close relative was buried in 1923 with a headstone still surviving. I have visited both of them in recent years. Why Portsmouth Records Office? Burial records can be checked at the Milton Cemetery office. Regards Ken Grubb, Cheltenham, Glos.

    3. I've been searching for family gravestones in the cemetery from around 1881 to 1949 and although I have the full plot details from the Portsmouth Records Office, I've not been able to find any headstones (except for a CWGC one). Were headstones only kept for a certain numbers of years ?

    3. Hello everyone, Some bodies were reburied in Milton Cemetery. Others (including two of my own ancestors) are still there - under the tarmac. Check with Portsmouth City Cemeteries Office (in Milton Cemetery) - they can tell you who's where if you give them the name(s) of the deceased. Ken. 1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Kingston Cemetery, Portsmouth
    2. Mike The simple answer is that not all graves had headstones - not sure if you have access to the MI's (available in transcript at the Hampshire RO or on fiche from the HGS) but they should tell you whether there was headstone. Over the years, some stones have been deemed unsafe or have been vandalised and so may have been removed. The Portsmouth Bereavement service based at Milton Cemetery Office should be able to assist. 3. Hi Shirley Back in the 1980's a few body's were removed to make way for a Lorry weigh bridge for Commodore Shipping Co Then I believe Portsmouth City Council advertised in the local paper that a car park would be built on the site and I think if you wanted you could have your relative removed. But most are still there. Very sad as I think the land was given to the City as long as it remained a green space!!!!!!
