Hi Martin hoping to check tomorrow. Take care,Linda and Tony Hi Linda & Tony: Could you please look up the marriage between William WILLCOCKS and Eliza(beth) YOUNG on 1 Jan 1825 at St. Mary's Portsea
Hello Carol hope to check tomorrow. Take care,Linda and Tony Dear Tony and Linda I wonder if you could check the following marriages for me from the IGI? William ELLIOTT to Elizabeth EVANS 9 JUN 1788 at Saint Thomas, Portsmouth. I am interested in the names of witnesses and whether it might give any additional details. William ELLIOTT to Elizabeth NORTH 27 AUG 1793 at Saint Marys, Portsea. I wonder if this is the same William ELLIOTT as above and whether it could be a second marriage. There is also a further William ELLIOTT marriage which I am also interested in and which I think could be that of the son of one of the William's above. This is also on the IGI: William ELLIOTT to Elizabeth PAYNE on 17 APR 1816 at Saint Marys, Portsea. It is extremely frustrating that these William ELLIOTTs are all marrying Elizabeths. I have 3 William ELLIOTTs in a row in my family but thankfully the last is a William John ELLIOTT. Thank you in advance. Kind regards Carol in Berkshire, UK

2 post cards of the funeral of crew of submarine A1 at Haslar which took place on 19th April 1904 can be seen at: http://www.pbenyon1.plus.com/Uniform/Phot/A1_Funeral.html Brian Cave who sent me the post cards to put on-line advises me that 7 of the crew were local to Portsmouth. Seems strange now to see something like this as a post card ! Paul 50.33.50N 02.26.70W http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Naval.html
You may be interested to learn that the oldest surviving building in the Dockyard - the Porters Lodge at Victory Gate has just been converted into offices and thus has a new lease of life. Built in 1708, it is located at the main entrance to the Dockyard. The history is that back in the 1700's, two porters lived there - William WOODROW from 1739 to 1780 and Thomas BUTLER from 1780 to 1800. The porters role was to guard the Dockyard boundaries and propert. They marked the working hours by ringing the muster bell and closing the gate against latecomers. To prevent excessive theft of timber, they also allowed "no person to pass ou of the Dock Gates with great coats, large trousers or any other outer dress that can conceal stores of any kind". The porter also sold beer to the men "to enable them the better to carry on their labour and not to distemper them" Take care Linda & Tony

Descendants of John Knight Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 KNIGHT was born Abt. 1843 in Alton, HAM, UK. He married MARY SMART 03 Nov 1864 in St. Mary's, Portsea, HAM, UK, daughter of GEORGE SMART and HARRIET NOBLE. She was born Abt. 1846 in Catherington, HAM, UK. Notes for MARY SMART: The 1851 Census on the 30 March has Mary aged 4 years, a scholar and born at Catherington. She was living with her parents in Clanfield. In the 1881 Census Mary lives with her husband John Knight and their seven children at Spitalfields, Alton, Hampshire and here her birthplace is shown as Holybourne, Hampshire, however this appears to be the correct person due to her age.
