Hello Di well it could be St Mary's Portsea or St Mary's church Alverstoke but if you do a google search for Hugh Wallis's site for batch numbers and search for your surname for both Portsea and Alverstoke for the time period you will find the church from there. Good Luck Linda and Tony Hi all Can anyone help? I have a Henry Stark or Starks married to a Mary possibly Dawson on the 15th december 1757 at a church called St marys, I have the family living in portsea and alverstoke, so would love to be able to locate where they married.or anything about this family. any help would be much appreciated thanks Di Rodgers
Hello Linda & Tony, When you finished your message by suggesting that there might be KNIGHT connections about that would link with your family I thought I would give you my small link to the KNIGHT name. This proved more difficult than I expected, though I'm pleased that I looked at the name more thoroughly than I obviously had previously. I have a George KNIGHT born in Colmore, HAM in 1829 who married my Great Aunt, Sarah Ridge BALDWIN, in Lillingstone Lovell, BKM on the 30th November 1865. He was a gamekeeper. I had 3 children of the marriage recorded on my FH programme but saw that the first child, Sarah, was shown as being born in 1858. While this was possible I thought I'd probably mis typed one of the dates. Now that there are more census images on line I checked the 1861/71 sheets and found GK and a Sarah in both years. However Sarah's age and birthplace did not look right. Fortunately (?) Milton Keynes is quite close and has a good Local Studies Library. They didn't have the Lillingstone Lovell PRs for marriages but they did have the Banns register and this showed GK as a widower. To get to the point GK's history appears to be as follows: GK born c1829 Colmore, HAM, First marriage to Sarah TURNER ( bap 21 Aug 1836) in Heath & Reach, BDF on the 25th June (not 23rd as in IGI) 1856. Daughter Sarah baptised in Heath & Reach in 1858. Sarah senior dies in Q4 1861 (buried in H&R 6 Oct 1861). GK's second marriage to Sarah Ridge BALDWIN as above and their two children, Elizabeth, 1866, and Frances Lucy, 1868, born in Leckhampstead, BKM. I've realised as I type this that Frances Lucy KNIGHT married her cousin Henry Thomas BALDWIN. HTB was the first child of Sarah Ridge BALDWIN's brother Thomas and Elizabeth Esther SCOTT. Finally GK's parents were Thomas KNIGHT and Sarah ROTHWELL (this name appears as BOTHWELL and WROTHWELL etc.). Their marriage is probably the one in East Tisted on the 20 Oct 1821 (IGI). I would be interested to hear from anyone with connections to the KNIGHT name Best wishes. Peter Wood Flitwick, Bedfordshire
Hello Linda and Tony Many thanks for the details of the St Mary's Portsea marriages featuring William ELLIOTTs. I thought it might be the St Thomas fiche that you did not have. As the William ELLIOTT who married Elizabeth NORTH at St Marys, Portsea was a bachelor and his marriage was after the birth of my ancestor it would seem more likely that my William ELLIOTT who married Jane CROSBY in 1840 was the son of William ELLIOTT and Elizabeth EVANs who married at St Thomas in 1788. I do have another favour if I may ask, as my William ELLIOTT born c1790 is probably the married? mariner found in the 1851 census. As far as my father recalls the census recorded him as married and if this is the case he must have had a third wife. I think wife no2 (Jane CROSBY) is the Jane ELLYETT who died Dec 1846 Quarter Portsea. On the IGI there is a further William ELLIOTT marriage that might be a third for my man: William ELLIOTT to Harriet POOK on 29th September 1847 at Saint Marys, Portsea. Please would you be so kind as to check this marriage to see if this William was a widower? His first marriage may well be the one to Elizabeth PAYNE in 1816 as he would have been about 26 at the time. Unfortunately I have no idea who the witnesses Anne ADAMES & John ADAMS were so no clues there. Now if only all these Williams had had middle names to distinguish them, life would be a lot easier .... Kind wishes and many thanks for all your help. Carol in Berkshire, UK
