With the help of Linda and Tony I discovered I too have Mitchells way back. Sarah Mitchell married James Cole in 1840. She was 21, he was about 47, a widower. I believe she is the Sarah Mitchell christened 25 July 1819 at St, Marys Portsea. (date of birth corresponds with her age in 1851 census) Parents are William and Frances. In the IGI there is a marriage recorded on 12 June 1814 of William Mitchell and Fanny Coles at St. Marys, Portsea. As I also researching the Cole family this is very interesting to me. The IGI also records the birth of Frances Elizabeth Coles 2 December 1790, christening 31 December 1790 at Buriton, Hampshire. Parents Charles and Frances Coles. Please, can anyone give me any more information on these statistics? Please could someone tell me where in Hampshire Buriton is? Also is Fanny a nickname for Frances? I think it is possible that Sarah married a relative on her mother's side. Does anyone have any ideas how I could prove this? Thank you for any assistance. Pat, Canada. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Knightroots@aol.com> To: <ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 16, 2005 11:19 AM Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] MITCHELL > > Hello Bob > we have MITCHELLs in our tree. > Where might you connect up? > Linda and Tony: > > Hello Listers, time to put my list of interests up to see if it shakes any > cobwebs. > NEWELL,GALLIENNE,MITCHELL,HOLLIS,WATERS,CAINS,McCALPEN,HUIT,BILLINGER,SIMPSO N, > FURGUSON,LAPPING,STALEY,WILLIAMS,DRAPER. > > Bob Newell > > > > > > > ==== ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT Mailing List ==== > Visit the knightroots website at www.knightroots.co.uk > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. Hi Linda & Tony: If you have access to St. Thomas Portsmouth marriages for 1843, could you possibly look up George GILES and Maria JOHNSON marriage on 16 October 1843. George should be 36 and may be a widower (hopefully!) and Maria age 22 b. Portsmouth, IGI ref. M062512 0919732 NONE. They have been found in 1881 and 1871 censuses ages 75/60 and 64/50 respectively. I have found no chr. for Maria. George was b. Reading/Newbury Berks abt. 1807, poss. chr. St. Mary Reading s/o John & Jane 13 Jan 1810. I think George married previously but haven't found a marriage in Berks, Hants or Herts that would fit my brickwall Sarah GILES . It would help to know if this later marriage has him as a widower, as he was shown at Sarah GILES 1858 marriage in St. Mary's Portsea as her father. There is a marriage in 1827 of a George GILES and Mary DATSON at Yalding Kent, with a dau. Sarah chr. 3 Jun 1832 at Frindsbury Kent, but that doesn't match her statement in four censuses that she was b. St. Albans Herts! Any help appreciated. Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.

Hello Marian & Dave Sorry but this would be an impossible task as there were many churches around that time period. We would love to be able to help and even with an address, no guarantees that a baptism took place there. Hi Rita Yes, I was talking about St Mary's Portsea and I also wondered if Richard GUDGE might actually be connected with the church itself as I had come across his name on more than one occasion. I should imagine he may well have been the parish clerk and as such might have witnessed a number of weddings. Regards from Carol > If the wedding was at St Marys Portsea, Richard Gudge was probably a Church > warden or Verger, as he witnessed quite a few of the marriage records I > trawled through. > > Rita

If the wedding was at St Marys Portsea, Richard Gudge was probably a Church warden or Verger, as he witnessed quite a few of the marriage records I trawled through.
