    1. HAWKINS Samuel
    2. Heather Pearce
    3. My most elusive HAWKINS relative: Samuel HAWKINS first child & s/o John & Sarah HAWKINS born 1848 Hampshire. His parents married 9 Nov. 1847 in the parish church Sopley, Christchurch Parish, Hampshire. I think it's Samuel's baptism 20 Oct. 1848 Bransgore, where his father & aunts & uncles seem to have been baptised. The family story is that he went to the U.S. - Lake Michigan area. I have not been able to find anything on him in the U.S. to date. As he was probably an ag.lab. he may have worked in this field or mining. As far as I know, none of his siblings followed him to the U.S. and four of them immigrated to Qld. Australia where they were engaged in farming & mining. Thanks, Heather

    3. Very Off-topic I know but please do not send me to Coventry. Tried that Harbour web-cam by the Portsmouth News and just got a black screen with a tiny box with a cross in it. Any body know where the setting is that needs changing to make it work ?? Even more annoying as it worked fine for years and decided to stop when I swopped to supersonic broadband. 1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Elson Rd School Brockhurst
    2. Rita Newton
    3. You are probably talking about "Old Elson School" which was a C of E school, on the corner of Elson Road & School Lane, just down from the junction of Elson Road with Brockhurst Road. It doesn't exist any more, the land was "redeveloped" in probably the late 1960s. My grandfather (John Reginald Bernard HINES) was a caretaker there in 1950s/60s. My mother and her brothers were pupils there, probably in a similar time scale to your mum & (somewhere) we have some class photos of Mum and her brothers. (Just found one of my uncle & his class -13 boys & a teacher dated 1924 -what a difference from current class sizes!) As a child in the mid 1950s I remember going to Old Elson School with my grandparents (not as a pupil, just being there whilst they cleaned) there was a main hall with a wood/coal stove, classrooms going off on 2 sides, and at the back of the main building there was another group of school rooms. Plus of course, the outside Loo block & quite a large amount of playground. It was a lovely building, flint exterior & there seemed to be masses of light in the rooms - large windows. If any records exist, they are probably at Hampshire Records Office at Winchester, it's worth an e-mail to them to enquire. If you do find any records, please let me know. Hope that infor helps. Rita PS another school (New Elson) was built further down Elson Road, but probably about late 1940/50s ----- Original Message ----- From: <TBakerAKF@aol.com> To: <ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 16, 2005 10:52 AM Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Elson Rd School Brockhurst > Does anybody on this list know if records exist for the above school for the > period 1925-1935? > > I've just found that my mum Phylis Barber attended during this period and am > keen to find out more. > > Many thanks > > Tony, > Bristol > > > ==== ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT Mailing List ==== > Visit the knightroots website at www.knightroots.co.uk > > ============================== > New!
