Hi everyone, Can sks give any assistance in locating "Green Lane" in the Gosport / Portsmouth areas please? Both the bride and groom were living in Green Lane when they were married at St Mary's Portsea in 1840. The parish details don't say that they were of that parish though. The families have strong Gosport connections, but even using a street index, there doesn't appear to be a Green Lane in Alverstoke, a number of Green other things though! any assistance gratefully recieved. regards to all, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Good morning everyone, Will on the Devon list just told everyone of a brilliant way of searching not only the rootsweb site, but in fact any site from google.com For example, if you want to search the rootsweb website for occurances of knightroots you would go to the google search page and type in: +knightroots +site:rootsweb.com if you wanted to restrict your search to the Portsmouth Gosport section of rootsweb, you would type: +knightroots +portsmouth gosport +rootsweb.com I tried searching for a keyword on my own genealogy website (albray.co.uk) and had 3 pages worth of google search results! This is an extremely useful technique! regards to all, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.323 / Virus Database: 267.8.1/28 - Release Date: 6/24/05

Linda and Tony, Thankyou so much. It certainly does help..... Elaine
Hi Sarah thanks for your reply. On this occasion, I did actually obtain the death certificate from the local registrar at Fareham, but I guess it could be worth asking them? Thanks again, kind regards, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.323 / Virus Database: 267.8.0/27 - Release Date: 6/23/05
Linda and Tony wrote: "The certificate should be an exact copy Jon" The word there is *should*. A cousin of mine received a copy of a death certificate from the GRO with the informant shown as 'Elizabeth Carter, Widow of deceased, Daughter-in-Law, Present at the death, Shirland'. This served only to confuse us, as we couldn't understand how someone could be both the widow and daughter-in-law (or possibly meaning step-daughter at that time). His wife was Elizabeth and there was a known daughter-in-law called Elizabeth Carter. A few months later I ordered some other certificates from Chesterfield RO, Derbyshire, which covers the above Shirland. I enquired about the informant on the certificate. I received a telephone call to say that in their original registers, the words 'widow of the deceased' had been crossed out. This explained everything and obviously was an error in the copying from the RO's registers to the GRO copy. So, what I'm saying is that if the certificate you obtained was from the GRO, maybe you could check with the relevent register office to see if their register contains exactly the same information? OK thanks both, will have a dig through the archives, can't remember that at all. So, maybe a possiblity that elizabeth did remarry or just take on his name? The certificate I have for Elizabeth's death is typed out, not handwritten. So what the original says is anyone's guess? any way of having that checked out do you know? BTW Forton is spot on for the area where Elizabeth was living in 1861. Cheers, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. For those who have been on the list some time now, you'll be used to the surname Albray...no doubt! Known variants so far in this family line are Allberry, Aldbury, Aubery, Aubrey, Albray and Allbray. I am currently stuck at the birth of Rhoda Allberry at Fareham on June 3, 1843. She was the daughter of George Allberry and Elizabeth Parsons (formerly child). Rhoda was christened on September 3, 1843 again at Fareham, and it would appear that between those dates George and Elizabeth were married, as Parsons isn't recorded on the christening details. They had another 2 children to my knowledge, James (b Jan 4, 1846) and Henry (b Dec 17, 1847 who was my wife's great grandfather). Not only does the family's name change from Allbray to Williams between the 1851 and 1861 censuses, but George appears to have died. There appears to be no marriage certificate for them though, no death certificate for George, and no marriage certificate for Elizabeth to someone by the name of williams. George was shown as being 53 in 1851, and born in an unidentifyable place, Reagal, possibly in Sussex. Even though close spellings have been found in various parts of the country, none have yet led to the discovery of his birthplace or his parents and sibblings. In all birth and marriage details for his children, he was constantly referred to as a labourer, with one exception on his son Henry's marriage certificate where he was said to be a seaman. I would dearly love to find him on the 1841 census, where he should be around 43 yrs old, and hopefully in the Fareham area. Elizabeth was still using the surname Williams in 1887 when she died at the age of 79. Her death certificate states she was the widow of Genge Williams, another name that totally eludes me. If anyone can shed any light at all on this family, I would be eternally grateful. Kind regards to all, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Well Su said she saw some lightning this morning, but I have to be honest, I didn't see any???? Plenty of water up here, but thankfully not enough in this local area to have caused too much problem. It's been very pleasant up here since late morning, quite a nice afternoon with just the odd little spot or two of rain, but nothing worth mentioning. I'd better not say too much in case we get another helping of the thunderstorms? I had a letter from the local optician this morning, telling me that they note they haven't seen me in a number of years, and encouraged me to make an appointment so that I could enjoy a continued quality of vision????? I think they may be just a little too late??? By about 20 years?? Mind you, it may be worth a shot, it could help me see those ancestors that I can't seem to find anywhere! If Genge WILLIAMS and not George ? then there was something a year or so back would be in the archives of the list and believe the details were that he was a publican running The White Swan or Horse Forton. Linda and Tony widow of Genge Williams, another name that totally eludes me.
