Hello Tony&Linda I am trying to find the birth of CHARLOTTE ABRAHAM ALVERSTOKE 1811/12, I have found a entry for 1804 so I am not sure if this is the CHARLOTTE I want or if there were 2 CHARLOTTES, When you have time would you look at the records that you have, also she was married ALVERSTOKE 1835 to JOHN READ from SOUTHAMPTON . Thank you for your time. Best wishes, Syd Hockey.

Thanks & morning Jon. Have a good day all,Linda and Tony
Hello Pat if you provide the full date including year we will check for you. We wait to hear from you,Linda and Tony: Would AKS be viewing the parish records for Alverstoke to cover marriages 1819? I would appreciate any information on the marriage between William Whiley/Wiley and Diana Janes, particularly parents names or parish/place of births.

Hi Jenny, just to let you know I've still got no further on Tryphosa Allbury. Even though recently I've had a lot of additional info sent my way on the surname as a whole, she wasn't included in it. all the best, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I have a copy of the will of my 4xGGrandfather, James Paul in which he refers to his wife Ann, formerly married to a Mr Thatcher. He seems to have been previously married to a Tryphosa Allbury who, according to the IGI, was the mother of at least some of his children. In his will he refers to the his daughter Mary Paul who married William Dowling and to his son James. The only likely christening of a Mary Paul in the IGI is one on 12 February 1790 at Holy Trinity, Gosport where the parents are given as James Paul and Raforia. Likewise, the only likely James Paul christening was on 20 March 1789 and had the same parents. Linda and Tony, please could you look these up for me and see if there is any additional information which might help. It's possibly James married 3 times and if so, seems to have had a penchant for wives with unusual names: I wonder what happened with "Ann", though! Also according to the will, another daughter of James, Susan (possibly Susanna) Paul married a John Boys, a Grocer in Gosport. I haven't found any record of this marriage. Has anyone else got a Boys family who might be connected? Susanna Paul was born in Gosport in 1779, but it's possible that Susan is a different child. James refers to "all those my nine several pews or seats in the Gosport Chapel." Would Holy Trinity have been referred to as a/the Chapel at that time? -- Jenny M Benson
I wonder if anyone has any connection to this family......... John SHERVILL (I have found more than 30 different spellings for this surname!) All I know about him is that his occupation was 'RN Seaman.' His daughter was Mary Ann born in Portsea/Portsmouth/Southsea around 1815. I am struggling to find siblings or her mothers name. I believe that she had a sister Elizabeth who was a witness at her marriage. (Elizabeth SHERVILL married John UDY in 1849, Gosport). In 1836, Mary Ann married Benjamin POLAND at St Marys Portsea. Their chidren were: Sarah Ann POLAND born 1838, Portsea Mary POLAND born 1839, Portsea Elizabeth Jane POLAND born 1841, Alverstoke Benhamin POLAND born 1845, Gosport Benjamin (senior) died in 1845. In 1848 Hannah POLAND (my gggrandmother) was born. There is no fathers name on her birth certificate. Subsequent children are: Samuel born 1850 Eliza born 1852 Elizabeth Jane Fletcher POLAND born 1854, died at 2 weeks old Martha born 1856 Rosina/Jane born 1857 All above born Portsmouth using the surname POLAND but later FLETCHER. In the 1851 and 1861 census, Mary Ann, widow, has a lodger, Charles FLETCHER who is 'married'. Mary Ann and Charles FLETCHER eventually marry in 1868. By 1864, Hannah FLETCHER had run away with the circus. At the age of 16, she married my gggrandfather James SEDGWICK, a travelling showman, in Lambeth. I wuld love to hear from anyone with any connection... Regards, Elaine
It's my first time on this particular list and I thought that I would post my surname interests in the area. In 1819 William WHILEY married Diana JANES at Alverstoke where they had at least two sons. They were born & baptised Henry WILEY 1820 abode EWER Common and William WILEY 1822. William and Diana also had a daughter Jane WHILEY baptised at Portsmouth in 1827 abode Barracks. I can find no others for them in between those years, although it's possible that with William (sen) being a Royal Marine Gunner, he was abroad during that time. I know they were on the Ascension Isles before/around 1840 as another son was born there and Jane married James Parfitt there at age 13-14. I have quite a bit of information on the Parfitts but not so much on the Whiley/Wiley's. An Elizabeth WHILEY also married Ascension Isles and she married a Charles TENNANT. I would love to know where the Tennants came from originally and prove that Elizabeth was another daughter born to William and Diana. If anyone is checking records for BMD and comes across the above names I would be grateful for the extra help and very much appreciate them taking the time. Likewise if I can help anyone who is also researching the above family names please contact me. Kindest regards, Pat B

(If you haven't, try going to BBC News 24 on the internet, as earlier this afternoon they had a long video of last nights events - the Battle of Trafalgar & the fireworks. This evening they may have something from the Drumhead ceremony at Southsea). Anyway, my good news. I knew from various sources that my gggranddad John PRIEST, was a Coastguard at Telscombe in Sussex, his first children were baptised in Gosport & later ones at Telscombe. He returned to Gosport after retiring as a Coastguard and is buried at Anns Hill Cemetery (found his grave on my last visit to Gosport). I had contacted someone in April 2004 (that is not a typo) who specialises in looking up Coastguard records at Kew & yesterday I had an amazing package in my post. She supplied so much info, I haven't been able to take it all in yet. But I now know John Priest was born in Boston Lincs on 16 May 1806. Sods Law - Boston for that time is is not on IGI, but contacted someone on the Lincs lookup who may be able to find a baptism. So that is a brickwall 1/2 way knocked down! Richd. KEMP Christening: 09 SEP 1796 Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England Age at christening: 1 Father: James KEMP Mother: Elizth. Hello All can some one help me please I am wandering If I can't find a marriage would it had taken place at a register office thank you best wishes to all from Marian perth W / A
Hello Linda and Tony I've now taken a look at your web site - great! - and now have a query - or two!? My 2 x ggf, Joseph ROBINS, moved to the Alverstoke/Gosport/Portsea/Portsmouth area from Guernsey between 1813 and 1822 when his wife Anne was buried. The Alverstoke Burial Register says: 26 May 1822: "Anne Robins (39) of Priddy's Hard, wife of Joseph Robins". I'd like to be able to find Joseph's death and/or burial. He was apparently alive when his wife died, but I haven't located him since then. He was born in Chichester in 1778. It is possible, I suppose, that he returned to Guernsey. I've checked FreeBMD for him and his 'missing' sons William Dear ROBINS (b. 1802) and George Lynch ROBINS (b. 1809). I'd also like to find the deaths and/or burials of his single daughters - Ann Howard ROBINS (b. 1801) and Mary Elisa ROBINS (b. 1813). All were born in Guernsey. I checked for a marriage for Mary Elisa but to no avail. Many thanks for any tips or help you can give. Cheers. Pam cliveden@acenet.net.au Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia.
Hi Linda & Tony: Could I trouble you to lookup the following at St. Mary's Portsea, please: 29 Oct 1825 Richard George KEMP and Mary DENTON Though her age might not be mentioned, I think she is more likely to be Mary DENTON, b. 11 May 1906 chr. 19 Jun 1806 Orange Street now King Street Independent, Portsea parents: Thomas DENTON and Mary which would make her 19 at marriage, than Mary DENTON, b. 22 Jun 1796, chr. 1 Mar 1804, St. James-Independent, Newport, Hampshire d/o William DENTON and Ann Richard George KEMP was chr. 12 Jun 1801 St. Mary's Portsea, Hampshire s/o James KEMP and Elizabeth (nee FULLJAMES) Maybe the witnesses could give me a clue., or perhaps an 1841 census for this couple would help. Also, is there a burial for a Sarah KEMP at St. Mary's Portsea between 7 Jul 1799 and 27 May 1803, when the second child of that name in the family was born? The second Sarah (Kemp) SQUIRE died 18 Apr 1863 in Portsea - would there be a burial record for her? Any help with these would be appreciated. Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.
