Does anyone have any comments about the following, please: Previous ship - Tribune. Any details known? Was this also a hulk? Under the column, "Whither.." this is recorded - "Shore P P L". What does this mean? For three years he received a wage for the "Tuition of Young Gentlemen". Does this refer to all trainee seamen or priviledged young people only. 2. PPL possibly Placed on Pension List. HMS Tribune was fairly busy from 1854 to 1855 with the Crimean War destroying a Russian Tower in 1854, the 1st Bombardment of Sevastopol 1854, destroying the Kimburne Forts 1855 and the 2nd Bombardment of Sevastopol. She then moved to the South China sea where her ships boats were in action at Canton destroying many war boats. The young gentlemen being educated would be Cadets and Midshipmen although training underwent a major change in 1853. The rate of pay would indicate a rank of Leading Seaman so the men under training could be gunners. JohnWinton's "Hurrah for the Life of a Sailor" would provide valuable background to this period. 3. Hello Joan, I'm sure someone far more knowledgeable than I will come up with better information, but in the meantime..... there is Chapel Cemetery on the corner of Eastern Road and New Road, Havant and there is Waterlooville Cemetery in Hulbert Road, Waterlooville [which is actually quite close to Ramsdale Ave], then of course there is Portchester Crematorium in Dore Ave., Portchester. Hope this is of some help. 1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] McGregor
    2. Hi Joan, There are three possibilities. Internment would have been at the Warblington or Hulbert Rd cemetry and cremation at the Porchester Crematorium. The BMD section of the Portsmouth Evening News ( now The News) might have an entry publishing funeral details but these details are not on the internet. The Hampshire Genealogical Society would have certainly recorded the monumental inscription if a headstone was put up. Hope this helps a little. Mike Waterlooville

    1. Marriage look ups ABRAHAM to CLEULL(CLEALL?), to PAYNE, to COLLINS and to TOOGOOD
    2. K Wood
    3. Hello Tony & Ann: When you get a chance could you please find details on the following weddings: From IGI-----James William ABRAHAM---Sarah Elinor CLEULL 20 Sep 1874 St Mary's, Portsea. James age matches for marriage, IGI birth and 1881 census. However, I believe(hope) Sarah's IGI name has been misinscribed on the IGI index and should be Sarah Eliza CLEALL per BMD Sept. Q 1874 marriage. Her year of birth on 1881 census matches age noted on the IGI marriage after the math. . From IGI----Robert ABRAHAM----Ellen PAYNE 11 Sep 1853 St. Mary's, Portsea From IGI----Cornelius ABRAHAM----Elizabeth Collins 19 April 1846 St. Mary's, Portsea From IGI----William ABRAHAM----Elizabeth TOOGOOD 31 Jan. 1837, St. Mary's, Portsea. Thanks very much: Keith Victoria, BC.

    1. RE: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] ALVERSTOKE PARISH RECORDS
    2. Pat Barsby
    3. You are very kind, what a wonderful offer. I actually do have the parish records for a son Henry WILEY at Alverstoke born 31 May 1820 - Baptised 2 July 1820. Father William was in the Royal Marine Artillery and their abode was Ewer Common. Then another for William WILEY at Alverstoke born March 1822 and baptised 24 Mar 1822. Nothing more up to 1830 there. I then found their daughter Jane WHILEY baptised at St. Thomas in Portsmouth on 3 June 1827 and their abode was Marine Barracks and William was a Gunner in RMA. All children had the mother Diana. I found no others for them there, but I have traced the family over to the Ascension Isles around 1839 where some births, baps and marriages took place. So perhaps the period of time between children Henry, William and Jane was when William senior was away earlier and Diana got a few years break as it were. I am keen to obviously find both Diana and William [senior] place of birth or an indication of their parents to progress back further, so any help would be amazing and I'd be most grateful for any pointers that you come up with.
