I am looking for informarion about the birth / christening of Elizabeth Williams about 1857. Her mother was probably Ann and the father was George as indicated in the 1881 census. Elizabeth married Robert Plaskett on Jan 31 1877. Thanks Dave Plaskett

Hi Rita >I am puzzled as to the move from Wiltshire to Gosport, which was before 1802 Possibly due to the French Wars which started 1793, until the Peace of Amiens, circa 1802ish, and then continued about 1803, for another 11 years or so. There could have been a connection with the armed forces (Army, Navy and RM), with the Dockyard or even supplying goods and services to these bodies - Portsmouth and Gosport would have been booming during this period, and was probably a place were a reasonably good living could be made if you had the right skills. I note that my wife's relatives moved around this time, into a town where war materials were being produced for the Army and Navy, and were eventually able to set up a business which lasted for another 40 years, until their product was probably undercut by cheaper imports from abroad. Many people living in the countryside during the time of Revolutionary / Napoleonic Wars were starting to feel the effects of war time inflation, and you could probably double your wages or more by moving to the right place. Modes of transport - farm carts - shank's pony etc., possibly over a period of years, with the father moving down to find work and the family following later ? And you could probably earn a living on the way down - there would have been quite large drives of cattle, pigs and sheep etc. from Wiltshire, supplying the armed forces along the coast, where there would have been a steady demand in the fleet - for both live and salted down. Talking to old drovers as a kid it was apparent they would stop when it got dark, and would sleep under the stars when the weather permitted - if the weather was bad, they would try to find a dry bed in a barn. If you go out into the countryside around Portsmouth ISTR there were still a few traces of some of the old drovers ways visible - least they were when I was down there in the 50s. Hi Linda & Tony Thank you very much for your reply. When you say Mile End is under the ferry port do you mean literally, that they built on it? Also can I write to the Portsmouth Bereavement Service for look ups, what fees do they charge? Hi Rita The Kennet & Avon Canal is one continuous waterway linking the River Thames at Reading to the River Avon at Bath. Originally it was built as three individual navigations. The Kennet Navigation, from Reading to Newbury and the River Avon, between Bath and Bristol. The 57-mile long canal joining these two separate river navigations was not completed until 1810 and so unlikely to have been a factor Some of our lot went from Gosport to Wiltshire, married there, moved back to Gosport, then over to the Isle of Wight and then back to Gosport. Must have been the attraction of all those HINES/HAINES folk? Hi Stacey The cemetery along the Eastern Rd would be Milton - opened in 1912. The Portsmouth Bereavement Service is based at Milton and they keep all modern registers. Hi all I am looking for any descendants of a seaman (RN), Alfred Moore PRITCHATT, born Birmingham in 1848, and his wife Jessie Bruce ANDREWS, who married in Portsea in 1877. They had 4 children, Amelia Bruce who married William J McCarthy in Portsmouth in 1915, Jessie Matilda who married in 1910 (husband unknown), Alice Mary and Alfred Joseph. Alfred Moore Pritchatt and his family were all living in Portsea in the 1901 census. He retired from the Royal Navy in 1886 and seems to have remained in the Portsea area for the rest of his life. I would love to make contact with living relatives or with anyone who is connected to this family in any way. Alfred Moore Pritchatt's brother Edmund immigrated to Australia in 1890. Thanks Leonie Oliver Binna Burra NSW Australia
Hi Leonie Just by chance I was looking through my Kelly's Directories for Portsmouth and noticed an Alfred Moore Pritchatt (the only Prichatt in the book) living at 170 Clive Road Portsmouth in 1932, this would make him around 84 years old? My directories then jump to 1948, 1951, 1956, 1960, 1962, 1972, 1975 when I think these stopped and I can't find any Prichatt's in the Portsmouth listings?
