A ship's rigging is her masts and ropes that support the sails, and a rigger is a man who maintains and arranges it. Dangerous work, as a slip often was a fatal fall. Hi Margaret & all Yes, that was the one thank you. Spent some time on it today. Did a search on Gosport & it came up with masses of articles, covering women working at Priddys Hard, children evacuees, Hardway & D Day, someone whose mother had a milk round with Dyers Dairy, Stokes Bay being out of bounds and much more. I imagine they have loads more on Portsmouth. It is well worth a visit - I think the site is up until the end of the year. Hello Listers I've been checking information I have stored on various ROBINS Wills. When I was in Winchester in 1992, I took note of early ROBINS Wills as follows: 1544 Willmus ROBINS de Winton 1562 Georgius ROBINS de Portsmouth 1576 ffranciscus ROBINS de Portsmouth 1577 Rogerus ROBINS de Quit Winton (Book 1, Folio 128). I have traced my ROBINS line back to a Will of John ROBINS proved in 1672. His date of birth was possibly around 1610. He married firstly (name unknown) before about 1635 and had two sons, John and Thomas. I'm descended through the latter. He married secondly to Alice (surname unknown) - from her Will it is clear that she is not the mother of John's two sons. In John's Will signed 24 Apr 1671, he describes himself as 'Mariner of Gosport'. Thomas, in his Will signed 7 Apr 1697, describes himself as 'Shipwright of Gosport'. It is thought that Thomas married Ann (surname unknown) around 1658. I don't have the Wills for Willmus, Georgius., ffrancicus or Rogerus. I think I ran out of time back in Winchester. If anyone can point me in the right direction for any of these queries, I'd be grateful. I can't find Winton on Parish Locator. Many thanks. Pam cliveden@acenet.net.au Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia.
Many thanks to all who replied to my call for help regarding information on the Caost Guard Station, Budleigh Salterton. You have given me enough leads to keep my fingers pounding the keyboard for the next few days. Donald Wood Portland, Oregon

Hi Joan As Jean says, those who died as a result of injuries or illness caused by service in the Great War are eligible for an entry on the CWGC site, up to a certain date. I forget the precise end date for inclusion on the CWGC site, but it was about 2 years after the end of both World Wars. Many army personnel suffering from the effects of gas and trench foot etc., my grand father included, died shortly after the end of the war, and similary, many matelots who served in RN Divisions which fought in the trenches on the Western Front ; there is also evidence to suggest that some of those who served on board ship died later from the effects of TB contracted during the War. Even during my time in the service, post WWII, there was still a worry with TB, and we were all subject to the usual annual checks. A check of the Death Certificate might give a clue to those who know about these things !
