Hi Re the Porchester Crematorian My brother would have died in approx 1955 but cannot be sure. My mother said that he was cremated and her father dealt with it all as she had me as a small baby and my father was away at sea in the Royal Navy. He thought that best as she wasn't living in Southsea at the time she was living in Hastings her home town and he knew she would not be able to return to visit his grave regularly. Would the Royal Navy have helped out with this sort of thing as my grandfather was Royal Navy retired ?? Her son was staying with her friend in Southsea when he was accidentally killed. His name was Christian and I presume Catt as that is what my surname used to be, my mothers name was Parsons . It is all quite mystifying. I must admit I am wondering if he ever was killed or perhaps was just adopted by her friend and brought up in her family. I think this because I got in touch with the Historical Collections Librarian and they could find no trace of him from the 1952 =1956 death index records. I also wonder if any one who subscribes to this list who has lived locally in Southsea for many years and is between the ages of 52- 58 years of age could have gone to school near Shaftsbury Road Southsea would they remember him ? When the monarchy was restored in 1660, it was decided that the king needed an income of £1,200,000, so new forms of taxation had to be found. One of these was the Hearth Tax which was imposed for only a brief period, 1662-1689,and was replaced by the window tax. As we do not have even one hearth in our home in Ontario, I think that it about time for one of our levels of government to reduce the income tax rate and enact a Hearth Tax. Hi Christine What year are you likely to be referring to? Our guess, quite frankly, is that a cremation would not have taken place as Portchester was the first local crematorium. There was a discussion on list recently and you will find http://www.srgw.demon.co.uk/CremSoc/History/HistSocy.html quite interesting. There were only 58 crematoria at the end of the 2nd world war in the whole of the British Isles.
