    1. Marriage Look-up, please, for Thomas MILLARD
    2. PMR
    3. Hello Linda and Tony I don't think I've asked this before - I can't check as I have a new computer and my old Sent emails are on the old hard disk. Would you be able to check for the marriage of Thomas MILLARD and Mary around 1680, please? If you have looked before, please disregard this request, and accept my apologies. Their daughter, Eleanor, was baptised in Havant and married in Bedhampton in 1688. Her eldest sibling (Mary) was baptised in 1684 in Warblington. Many thanks. Pam cliveden@acenet.net.au Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia.

    1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Does anyone hav any suggestions?
    2. Hi Jon The simplest answer is probably one word..........poverty. Presumably prior to Elizabeth being widowed, they lived in South Stoneham parish - with 4 children to support, Elizabeth managed to get work at the vicarage but not enough money to feed and house the children...and no matter how much the Vicar liked her dumplings, there would probably not have been room at the vicarage. Therefore the 3 youngest went to the workhouse - possibly temporarily until Elizabeth got on her feet whilst the eldest being aged 12 was old enough to earn his keep and was therefore billeted at his Aunt's house. Hope this helps Linda & Tony

    1. John Lawes
    2. Dear Tony and Linda, Thank you for the information on John Lawes and his wife Mary Knight. It looks as if this is probably the right John Lawes but then he and his wife disappear, apart from a mention of John as a witness at Henry's marriage to Emma Silverlock. I can't find any reference in IGI or the census records in Ancestry. I would like the full details of John and Mary's marriage. Many thanks, Maureen

    2. Just checked Jon and she isn't there. Linda and Tony A while ago you sent me the baptism details of Harry George Richard ALBRAY at Christchurch Gosport on April 9, 1909. Could you possibly check the exact same date for the baptism of Grace Ellen RUSSELL please? The children had the same mother but different fathers due to Caroline ALBRAY being widowed and her remarrying.

    1. John Lawes
    2. Hello Maureen i not sure if you have heard of the IGI at www.familysearch.org but have just checked in case you're a newbie to family history and there is a baptism there of Henry LAWES son of John & Mary in Holy Trinity church Gospor 5 Oct 1825 and not Portsmouth and a marriage in St Mary's Portsea of a John LAWES & Mary KNIGHT 26 Oct 1819 at St Mary's Portsea. Would you like the full details sent? Also if you check the above site you might find the possible correct baptism for your John LAWES but difficult pre 1837 . Linda and Tony Is it possible to find John Lawes, the father of Henry Lawes, who was born about 1800 possibly in Hampshire? His son was born in Portsmouth in 1826 and was a customs officer. I haven't been able to find any record of the father or mother. Thanks Maureen

    1. RE: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Chandos Street
    2. Pete & Joy
    3. Geraldine I have a dog eared and grubby map of pre-war that shows the street, mind you, you need to use a bit of imagination as the name is not very clear. The area was redeveloped in the 1960s and Chandos Street is now under a couple of shops that make up the shopping centre of Commercial Road. The current Boots (was Timothy Whites and Taylors and then became Boots) store may just touch the site of the old Chandos Street. A regular denizen of the area should be able to advise on the shop names. Pete
