Hi everyone, Among my many interests is the Postal History of South East Hampshire and the emergence of the many Post Offices and Sub Post Offices serving the expanding population of this area. Did one of your ancestors run any of the following Post Offices? Catherington 1936 Chalton 1891 Clanfield 1891 Cowplain 1897 Crookhorn Lane 1970 Denmead 1886 Hambledon 1843 Hart Plain (Waterlooville) 1961 Hazleton (Cowplain) 1966 Horndean 1798 Lovedean 1931 Purbrook 1841 Stakes Hill 1891 Waterlooville 1847 Widley 1931 If so I would like details. If the office is not listed I would still appreciate information. Mike Waterlooville
Thanks to David and all who have replied to our e-mail on the above . We still have to prove the age of great uncle who was born in India? but doesn't appear in the records for tracking down in London. Kind regards Linda and Tony
Hi Pamela: I may have posted about KEMP recently, but none of your other names fit my interests, and my KEMP line is earlier than the dates you mention. There were several KEMP families in Portsea in the early 19th century. For a long time, I had difficulty determining the particular Sarah KEMP who had married Edmund SQUIRE, out of those christened at St. Mary's Portsea. These were, from IGI: Sarah KEMP b. 29 Dec 1804 chr. 16 Jun 1805, parents George KEMP and Sarah (20) Sarah KEMP b. 27 May 1803 chr. 26 Jul 1805, parents James KEMP and Elizabeth (20) Sarah KEMP chr. 31 Oct 1806, parents Robert KEMP and Hannah (19) Sarah KEMP c. 30 Sep 1808, parents William KEMP and Jane (17) The marriage took place at St. Mary's Portsea on 8 Jan 1826, at which time the numbers in parentheses represent the approximate ages based on christening dates (but see below). In February last year I received a message from Steve Baker on this list. He mentioned the following family: James KEMP m. Elizabeth FULLJAMES at St. Mary's, Portsea, on 4 Nov 1792 Children: Mary Harriet KEMP chr. 28 Jul 1793 St. Mary's, Portsea James KEMP (2) and Jno. Richd. KEMP (1) chr. 9 Sep 1796 St. Mary's Portsea Sarah KEMP b. 29 Apr 1799 chr. 7 Jul 1799 St. Mary's Portsea Richard George KEMP, chr. 12 Jun 1801 St. Mary's, Portsea (m. Mary DENTON 29 Oct 1825 St. Mary's Portsea) Sarah KEMP b. 27 May 1803 chr. 26 Jul 1805 St. Mary's Portsea Frederick KEMP chr. 5 Apr 1805 St. Mary's Portsea William Henry KEMP chr. 2 May 1806 St. Mary's Portsea As you will see from the below information this does appear to be the correct KEMP family for Sarah, though her birth date is different by four days. I have marriage info for the parents, for Richard George KEMP, Edmund SQUIRE and Sarah KEMP, and for a John KEMP and Mary Ann HEATHER 12 Nov 1820 at St. Thomas, also John KEMP and Leanes BOYCE 2 Dec 1823 at St. Thomas, thanks to Linda and Tony's generous lookups. Although I do not have a death or burial record for Sarah b, 1799, it would be very likely that she died before May 1803 when a second Sarah KEMP was born in the same family. The only child of Edmund SQUIRE and Sarah KEMP was Julia SQUIRE, who married Henry John WILLCOCKS and they were my great-grandparents, married at All Saints, Portsmouth on 23 Oct 1852. The question of which Sarah KEMP was my great-great-grandmother is now definitively settled, as my greatuncle Henry William Squire (HWSW below) personal genealogical notes from 1929 or earlier that have recently been sent to me as a result of a contact through Essex lists, since he lived in Harwich and Ramsey. He devoted a whole page to his maternal grandparents and stated "Sarah Squire - Born May 23rd 1803 - Died April 18th 1863" underneath Edmund's dates "Born March 8th 1802, Died Feb 12th 1845." I would like to find the family in 1841, if anyone can provide the information. In 1851, Sarah is at: HO107/1658/F9 33, Lion Place, Sarah Squire Head(widow) 47 Government annuitant b. Portsmouth Julia Dau 24 Dressmaker In 1861, I again have no apparent census information, but Sarah would be 57, widowes, and probably with her relatives, but Julia by that time was married to Henry John WILLCOCKS, who died 15 Dec 1864 (according to HWSW) HWSW also wrote the following about Edmund and Sarah: "My Maternal Grandparents were Edmund Squire and Sarah his wife nee Kemp they were both born at Portsmouth, the Kemps were well known Hatters and Manufactors of Straw Hats for the Navy, there was a large family of Kemps while Edmund Squire was a Warrant Officer in the Navy & died by sunstroke at “Mauritius” where he was buried." Hence the Government Annuitant status for Sarah in widowhood! I would like to hear from anyone with details of (a) 1841 census for Edmund (39) and Sarah Squire (38) likely both shown as 35, in county with daughter Julia (14). (b) 1861 census for Sarah Squire (57) who may be with son in law Henry John WILLCOCKS (33) and her daughter (34) (c) Any information about other descendants or ancestry of the KEMP/FULLJAMES family members listed above. Also, if Steve Baker is still on the list, I would like to contact him again about these connections. Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.

For any Yorkskshire researchers but not for main discussion on the list please but for general information. Linda and Tony (List Admin) Subject: CARN Ticket The East Riding of Yorkshire Archive Service will be joining the County Archives Research Network (CARN) readers ticket scheme from the start of September. Visitors will need to obtain a reader's ticket by providing proof of identity, which must include their name, current address and signature. We will also be issuing day tickets, for those unable to provide such information. We have decided to introduce the system now to provide increased security, and in preparation of our move to a new building in 2006. I would be grateful if you could draw this to the attention of anyone intending on visiting the office. Further information on the scheme, and on the required proofs of ID can be found by visiting our website www.eastriding.gov.uk Many thanks Lizzy Baker Archivist East Riding of Yorkshire Archive Service

Hi Tony & Linda thank you for the details on Elizabeth Hardy's burial at Anns Hill cemetery. Sorry to ask this, was there no additional information, such as where she lived, eg Forton, or place where death occurred etc, which there has been on all other burial records you've sent me from Anns Hill? Or was this entry a bare bones job? (please pardon pun!) Thanks again for all your help, kind regards, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. I am told by Mary Trevan, District Aliasing team Co-ordinator Free BMD that there was a glitch with district aliasing that affected some Portsmouth and Portsea entries in the June update and that this was fixed at the July update. I have done a check and all seems to be well again. Mike Hill

Hi listers, I have details of a "family" in the 1861 census, but I'm somewhat bemused by the fact that the "family" is split in three. the widowed mother, Elizabeth harvey, is working as a cook at St John's vicarage, Forton, Gosport, while 3 of her children aged 10 (Charlotte), 8 (George) and 5 (William), are at the South Stoneham Union workhouse. A 4th child, aged 12 (Elisha), is living with an aunt at Millbrook, Southampton. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this may have been the case? In 1864 and 1868, Elizabeth has 2 more children, and in 1871is recorded as Elizabeth Hardy, wife of Charles Hardy. There is no sign of the daughter Ann born 1864, only amelia born 1868. Ann is found with her brother William in the 1881 census though. This all seems like a very odd set of circumstances to me, so any suggestions that may explain all this would be gratefully appreciated. regards to all, Jon -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
