Hi, Would someone take a look at 1851 Census for an Emma CROOKs b. 1850 IOW. She would be about one year old. Thanks kindly, Edna - Ottawa
Hello Peter This was probably a committee made up of representatives of various insurance companies based in Portsmouth. When I first started studying for my exams in Portsmouth in the 1970's, the organisation was the Portsmouth Insurance Institute and arranged lectures, social events as well as an educational programme and the annual examinations for Associateship and Fellowship of the national organisation - the Chartered Insurance Institute. Any student automatically becomes a member of the Institute which commutes to life membership after retirement from full time employment. After I qualified, I held the post of Education Secretary for a few years but the Portsmouth Institute merged with Southampton several years ago. Somewhere I have a book with the names of the past presidents since the early 1900's and will dig it out and check the names for you. Take care Tony Knight
Funny you should ask that ! I've just been looking up where to find wills. It depends whether you're looking for wills before or after 1858. From 1858 proving a will was for the Court of Probate; and the wills are held at the Principal Registry of the Family Division Probate Search room where they can be read for a small fee (Address - First Avenue House 42 -49 High Holborn London WC1V 6NP; web address - www.courtservice.gov.uk/fand/prob_guidance.htm ) Copies of wills, probate and administration grants are available by post - for fee- from York Probate Sub-registry. You need to know the date of death. The National Probate Calendar is the index to these will and can be seen at the PRO (National Archives - Kew) the FRC, the Guildhall London, and the Society of Genealogists. You could try PROCAT - it's the online catalogue for the National Archives (website - pro.gov.uk) Before 1858, wills were proved in church courts - and records of these are usually held at county record offices The exception is the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, which is at the National Archives. (For these wills the court used for proving the will depended where the estate of the testator was located. There were three "levels"; archdeaconry, bishopric, archbishopric. If you only had property in one archdeaconry, the will was proved by the archdeaconry court; if the property was in two archdeaconries and one bishopric the will was proved in the bishop's court; if the estate was in more than one bishopric the archbishop's court - either York or Canterbury - proved the will.) All the above information is from "Tracing your Ancestors in the Public Record Office", Amanda Bevan,6th Ed., published by Public Record Office, Richmond, Surrey TW9 4DU. I've condensed and paraphrased. Hope this helps a bit - although I don't think you'll find the wills on line yet. Actually Liz, you will find him in 1881 as a boy 2nd class, age 15, born Sallyoak, Worcester, on HMS Impregnable in Devonport. HMS Impregnable at that time was a Boy's Training Ship in Devonport. David
You didn't say which year. Wills up to 1858 are held at Winchester Records Office & copies cost £3 as long as you have the details. if you don't they may charge a Research fee. Ann D??? (I can never remember her name - search on Isle of Wight Coastguards for her website - it has masses of info) has an index of Hampshire Wills to 1858 & she is happy to look up names. Some Hampshire libraries may also have the index on fiche (I found the 3 Wills I'm about to order from Hampshire Record Office, by looking at the fiche at Gosport library) After 1858 they are in Chancery Lane Holborn, London. If you are able to get there, they charge £5 for a Will (or did last time I was there - you need to find the name/year & some of those books are pretty heavy!). There is a Probate office in York (try to google on Probate Office York)which can supply copies of Wills by post or e-mail - I haven't tried it so don't know what they charge. Hope that helps - by the way what names are you looking for in Portsea? Hi, All PCC wills for the period of 1384-1858 are now available to download (at a cost of L3.(?) each) from this site provided by The National Archives. www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/ Cheers, Edna - Ottawa
Hi Liz, HMS Duke of Wellington was launched in 14 Sept 1852 as HMS Windsor Castle but was renamed in honour of the Duke who died on that day. After serving in the Crimean War she was relegated to harbour service in Portsmouth in 1863. She was decommissioned in 1909 so would have appeared in the 1871,1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses David ----- Original Message ----- From: "Liz McAsey" <eamcasey@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2005 11:26 AM Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] HMS The Duke of Wellington census returns > Please could anyone tellme if there were census returns for HMS Duke of > Wellington,I am looking for a sailor who gave that ship as the one he was > serving on onhis daughters birth certificate in Portsea in 1890, his name > was Anthony Rattenbury [or Rottenbury Griffiths and he was born Birmingham. > Thanks, > Liz > > > ==== ENG-HAM-PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT Mailing List ==== > Granny SMITHs aren't just the name of an apple they are in many a family tree too > > ============================== > Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. My grandfather Richard Daniel Gawn (1862-1950) was a civilian writer in Portsmouth Dockyard. He was also a lifelong member of the Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows and held various senior positions in that organization. According to his obituary he was for many years a member of Portsmouth Insurance Committee. I assume that this committee would have functioned between the two World Wars prior to the introduction of government-managed social services. I've not been able to find out anything about the Committee. Does anybody have any information about it? Thanks, Peter Gawn Canada.
Please could anyone tellme if there were census returns for HMS Duke of Wellington,I am looking for a sailor who gave that ship as the one he was serving on onhis daughters birth certificate in Portsea in 1890, his name was Anthony Rattenbury [or Rottenbury Griffiths and he was born Birmingham. Thanks, Liz

Hi Linda & Tony, Thanks for these. Now if I could just find baptisms for the 12 children in this family I would be one happy bunny! I have only managed to find them with the census, which is why I had missed young Thomas until now.
