    1. BRAMBLE
    2. The marriage entry and baptism relating to the BRAMLEs wer spelled ROSS. On free BMD site there is a marriage for a Jemima ROHSS Dec 1/4 1871 Portsea district. Also if you go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm clcik on country slection menu, then England, then Hampshire and then P for Portsea put in a name top right hand corner and close a window each time you click on a church and the name will return on its own for the surname ie ROHSS. There will be a variation as many couldn't read or write and therefore there was a tendency to write as sounded. Hope you can understand what we have written it isn't as awfl as it sounds and very fruitful. Good luck Meg. Linda and Tony Thanks very much for the information re Mary Ann Ross. Are you able to say if there were any Röhss entries in the Portsea area?

    1. BLEACH
    2. Hello Margaret if you go to www.familysearch.org and then IGI and type in batch number C062491 you will see there is a Mary Ann BLEACH in 1821 and in 1851 a Martha but no Mary Ann see what you think maybe she is one but maybe not.. Trouble is a birth place isn't always a baptism place and a 1/4 on BMD could be a baptism anytime from birth to adulthood. The baptism could have taken place anywhere in or out of the area too say Portsea (many churches) as an example. Family history is fun isn't it) Sorry,Linda and Tony Free BMD shows the birth of Mary Ann BLEACH at Havant in the June quarter of 1853. Would it be possible to see if there is a baptism recorded at Havant church please? Thank you. Margaret

    2. PMR
    3. Hello Linda and Tony Many thanks for the URLs you sent. I'll check them out. One reply told me that Forton became a Parish in its own right in 1841, so it is possible that my 'lost' Alverstoke rellies who were on the 1841 Census were buried from there. From reading the replies, it seems that Ann's Hill cemetery could be a possible 'resting place'. Do I need an exact date for a check of this cemetery, please? Cheers. 1. Forton, Hampshire
    2. Hello Pam an approx year in up to a 5 year slot would be ok Anns Hill cemetery didn't start until 1855 but possibly Forton St John could be the place otherwise and the burials we have for there are 1841-79. A lot depends on where they were living when they died as could be Elson St Thomas,Holy Trinity church Gosport,Alverstoke church all pre 1855 (as well as Forton St John). Of course they may have moved around and been living in Portsea.... Will leave you to ponder....Linda and Tony Hello Linda and Tony Many thanks for the URLs you sent. I'll check them out. 3. Just in case there is still any lingering confusion over my original message, here it is again. I am interested in the BRAMBLE family of Portsea in Hampshire, particularly Benjamin BRAMBLE who married Mary Ann ROSS around 1810. As one of my RÖHSS family had the middle name BRAMBLE, I wondered if Mary Ann was really of the RÖHSS family. Any takers? Meg, W. Sussex -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. missing surnames
    2. we have just come across batch no C091301 in Dorset but it refers to Forton by Alverstoke baptists. Ignore the warning about the fact it could refer to several locations or something like that and just click ok. You might just find some of your missing rellies amongst the 144 people located there. Good luck anyway,Linda and Tony

    1. Police History
    2. We recently purchased a second hand copy of "A History of The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary 1839-1966" It is not indexed by name and so we cannot do look ups - however, some of the incidents may be of interest to listers. January 1879 - Gosport - Sgt Gibson was reprimanded for not investigating a complaint of drunken brawling in a pub "but through idleness sent only a 3rd class constable to clear the tavern and manage two drunken men on his own" October 1880 - Ventnor - Sgt Lowe was admonished to display more zeal and activity in the discharge of his duty. A gipsy encampmment on New Down, Ventnor had to be removed and the sergeant " in place of dealing with this difficult and troublesome duty himself merely sent a 2nd class constable thus avoiding a very unpleasant duty on a very wet morning"
