    1. Ann HUIT
    2. Hi it's about time I gave one of my walls a dusting off and try to sort it. Looking for Birth details and parents of Ann HUIT b abt 1819, father on her marriage cert was William HUIT Boatswain RN. A witness was a Mary HUIT (could be mother). Ann married Thomas HOLLIS 26 Jun 1842 Portsea, she died 4 May 1845 Portsea. The nearest I can find is 1871 census Portsea William HUIT head b abt 1787 Liverpool occ Gunner RN and Mary Wife b abt 1794 N America, Canada. Could they be the same, both in RN what's difference between Gunner and Boatswain could he have changed his trade in the RN. Suggestions wanted Bob Newell

    1. The National Archive 1901 census
    2. The National Archives advised last Friday that FriendsReunited had bought the contract for the 1901 census service from QinetiQ The Message from TNA was as follows: "This is to advise you that QinetiQ (operators of our popular 1901 census service) have sold the contract this afternoon to FriendsReunited. We were not party to the negotiations but our approval was necessary. We sought and obtained assurances about the standard of customer service FriendsReunited will offer and believe that it is a positive development for 1901 customers. Customers will not notice any difference in the way the service operates." A press release will be issued by the two parties on Monday Linda & Tony

    2. Hi Bob, Its always worth giving the National Archives a going over. Your boatswain is there in several references serving from 1818 t0 1854. The boatswain looks after all the masts, boats and rigging, the Gunner the guns, Ammunition and Powder. I suspect the gunner is the son of the boatswain. Mike Waterlooville

    1. 1841/51 Census
    2. Hi back on the trail again has anyone got the 1841/51 Census that could look up the HUIT family for me. Ann HUIT married Thomas HOLLIS 1842 in Portsea and the Father on marriage Certificate was William HUIT (Boatswain RN). A witness was a Mary HUIT. The nearest I have found is William NEWELL in 1871 Portsea Census with wife Mary b North America. He is listed as occ Gunner RN. I don't know how much difference a Boatswain is to Gunner do you. Hoping to find this family in Hampshire. Regards Bob Newell

    3. Thank you, that's very interesting - his brother married her sister the previous year, and Frances was a witness at that wedding. Could I make one more request please, then I promise not to ask anything else for a while! Free BMD shows the birth of Mary Ann BLEACH at Havant in the June quarter of 1853. Would it be possible to see if there is a baptism recorded at Havant church please? Thank you.
