    3. Hi everyone, If there is anyone trawling through the 1841 census of Hants, particularly Portsea, Fareham and Gosport areas, could they please keep an eye open for a George Allberry/Aldbury/Aubery/Aubrey/Albury/Albray etc etc? Believed to have been born outside the county, and more than likely working as a Labourer. Marital status unknown, and aged around 43 in real terms (going by his age given on the 1851 census). Hi Bob Can't answer your query specifically, but if you look on one of my favourite sites, which is www.historicaldirectories.org, you will see there are eighteen directories for Hampshire there, some of which date back to the eighteenth century. Apart from Kelly's there were Pigots, Slaters and Post Office directories and more, all with useful information and very easy to search Hope this helps a little Margaret > Could someone tell me what year the Kelly's directories started approx. > > Bob > >

    3. >could he have changed his trade in the RN. Suggestions wanted Highly unlikely Bob, dare I say impossible - "if" they are the same person most likely someone got it wrong on the latter entry - you know what relations are - they think they know what you do or did, but in fact have little real idea. By the time they made Gunner or Boatswain, they were usually be at an age where a change would be almost impossible ie a whole load of new skills, acquired over many years. They would both have probably spent many years achieving the status of Warrant Officer, probably with many ups and downs on the way, this at a time when structured advancement on the lower deck was still very much in its infancy and full of ups and downs, and his rating ie ORD., AB, PO etc. would depend very much on the First Lieutenant on each ship he joined in the early years of his career. For the record the PRO catalogue, http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/Default.asp as far as I can see, only includes one warrant officer with this name ADM 29/23/397 Original page number: 397 William HUIT; Rank: Boatswain; Born: [Not Given]; Age on entry: [Not Given]; Dates served: 28 February 1818-31 December 1854 and see also ADM 29/23/406 for what appears to be the same person, both B'suns. Regret they would both appear to have gone to pension (if they are two different people) before Warrant Officers were included in the Navy List, so one can't check from that angle.
