    3. Hi: Your recent message about a death in the dockyard has intrigued me. My wife's uncle, George Herbert (Bert) Lindsell, broke his back in a fall at the dockyard and died some months later in 1963. Is this the same accident? 3. Hi all Bazzer thank you for that link. Does anyone know whether the Council have published a list of the affected headstones, I couldn't see anything on their website - so unless you frequently visit the grave(s) of your ancestors, you wouldn't know of the problem. 3. A cousin found this in a Sunday paper - I was wondering what was happening there. "Anger after town hall 'topples' gravestones. A council is threatening to remove more than 900 gravestones from a cemetery unless families of the dead agree to foot a £100,000 repair bill. Earlier this year council chiefs classed 1,089 stones in the graveyard as unsafe after carrying out 'topple tests'. Only 135 families have agreed to fix their headstones. Others have refused and the stones have been laid on the ground or held up with stakes in Anns Hill cemetery Gosport, Hampshire. The relatives claim there was nothing wrong with the stones and have demanded that Gosport Borough Council returns them to their proper state. Campaigner Janet Bone, 56, said : " we go as a family to my parents' graves every two weeks. The stones were never wobbly at all and to then be told we have to pay to have them repaired is scandalous" Rita

You could also try the local newspapers, which are in the Central Library in Portsmouth. 2. Hi, It would have most certainly have been reported in the local paper viz The Evening News. If you know the date of death then it would be easy to narrow down the edition in which the report appears. In addition the dockyard authorities would have held a Board of Enquiry the results of which would also be reported in the press. I believe microfilmed copies are available at Portsmouth City Library. Good hunting Mike Waterlooville

I am hoping it was recently added and that I am not the complete idiot that I am feeling now. Thank you for taking the time to point this listing out to me. The information here is what it is on the marriage certificate. In looking at the marriage certificate the E. Lewis could possibly be interpreted as C. Lewis. Jean

    1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Marriage by Banns
    2. Rita Newton
    3. Hi List Have a marriage by Banns in April 1801 at St Thomas Portsmouth (Haines/Seger). They were both described as "Igmisnea" which I gather means "not of this parish". My queries are 1. What is the correct spelling of Igmisnea - as I can't read it very well on the marriage register photocopy 2. As they were "not of this parish" does that mean the Banns would also have been read in their own parishes? 3. Does anyone know if the Banns from 1801 at St Thomas still exist and if so, how can I get a copy/information. (I've just sent an e-mail to Portsmouth Records Office asking this). thanks Rita
