    3. Hi David, Unfortunately he was in Ireland in 1881 so there is no census for him and in 1901 he was no longer in the army and was living in Manchester. Cheers Mark -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of David Parker Sent: 22 November 2006 18:52 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Fort Brockhurst Fort Brockhurst was indeed the Army Discharge Depot until 1914. A Military Staff Clerk is one who is usually working at a headqurters or depot rather than with a regiment. He was often quite senior, a sergeant or a Warrant Officer. Usually a census quotes the rank of regular soldiers, and if you search you can often find his regiment, although chances are that most of the officers at least were seconded from their regiments. Have you serached the 1881 and 1901 censuses? Chances are that he would have still been serving at the time of one of these. davbid ----- Original Message ----- From: "mark ware" <[email protected]> To: "Portsmouth Mailing List" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 22, 2006 7:03 AM Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Fort Brockhurst > Hi All, > > > > Can anybody help me with some information about Fort Brockhurst & Fort > Elson? 3. Hi All, Can anybody help me with some information about Fort Brockhurst & Fort Elson? I have a George Thomas ROOK living on the base in 1891 with his whole family and he is listed as a Military Staff Clerk of the Discharge Depot. Am I right in assuming that the Discharge depot was responsible for all the discharges for the Army and would he have been a civilian or a soldier that had been appointed to clerical duties? Many thanks Mark

    3. Bob it's from the Free BMD index, no such info as birthplace etc, you'd have to actually get the certificate to see what info is on there.......birthplace still won't be though. Just to throw a spanner in the works, there's also a John Gallienne born 1863 at Guernsey on one of the Channel Island censuses, but you seem to have found your John with his grandmother in mainland UK on that census. Any way of you finding your John's birth details at Guernsey? All the best for now, Jon

    1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Missing relative John GALLIENNE help needed
    2. I am trying to trace a missing relative John GALLIENNE b Abt 1862 Guernsey Channel Islands according to the 1871 Census where he was living with his Grandmother Mary BURGESS nee RILEY and his sister Ellen Mary b 6 Apr 1864 in Alverstoke Gosport. Ellen Mary was classed as an Idiot from birth and also suffered Epilepsy (probably why she was called an idiot) from the age of 4 probably the reason she was living with her grandmother as her parents at that time had twins to support and would not be able to cope with her as well. Why John was living there I don't know, was he helping to look after his sister. In 1872 their grandmother Mary died and by the 1881 Census Ellen Mary was in the Alverstoke House of Industry and John was nowhere to be found on any census so far. Being that he would have been only ten years old why did he not go and live with his parents, did he die, did he go into the House of Industry with his sister, did he join the navy and follow his father? I have found no evidence of any of this as yet. Quite a Mystery anyone want to try and solve it. Bob

    1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Thomas Henry GALLIENNE lookup 1861
    2. Hi Jon Have just found them on an old backup disc I had. They are in Gosport so that tells me they were there then, shame I was hoping to get some idea about their son John GALLIENNE b 1862 Guernsey. I presume that it is their son as he was living with Thomas and Ellen's daughter Ellen Mary at their Grandmothers house in the 1871 listed as grandson and granddaughter unless he was the son of another GALLIENNE. There is nothing after the 1871 about this John. Ellen Mary was and Idiot Epileptic and later after years in the alverstoke house in Industry admitted to Knowle Hospital where she died at the age of 18. Now when the Grandmother died in 1872 did they both go into the workhouse as their parents at this time had twins to support. 1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Finding occupants at an address in a census
    2. Hi Jon, You certainly can and it is very easy providing you know the names of the road/street etc. I got quite fed up with a piecemeal £5 here and there so subscribed to FindMyPast for £65 worth in order to track all my DOWSE, LANDER, MOORLEY, LONGCROFT and WRESSELL census records. This gives me unlimited access to census and register records for a whole year and it has been super. If during your research you find a transcription error and report it to them and the error is agreed and corrected you get 3 unit credits and I have already amassed some 70 units. If you do a street search for Duke Street, Hampshire you will get five choices and you choose the one you want. I found it extremely useful for some of my LANDER family who had been misrecorded as LAUDER. I test drived Find My Past against Ancestry and found them to be more comprenhsive than Ancestry and some of the others now getting on the bandwagon. Mike Waterlooville
