Hi Jon, On the Streetmap site Bedford St. is near Forton Rd. Gosport. Could they have lived like upstairs/downstairs? Edna - Ottawa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jon Nixey" <[email protected]> To: "Rootsweb Portsmouth Gosport" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 27, 2006 10:02 PM Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] How many Bedford Streets were there in Gosportin 1881? Hi everyone, I'm a little puzzled over this one. I have two families in the 1881 census, one living at 4 Bedford St, and one living at 4 Bedford Str., but they are not next to each other when you use the "view neighbours" feature. they appear quite a number of households away. Could there have been an uper and lower Bedford Street, both starting at 1 etc, which makes it look this way? There is a relationship of sorts between the two families, Sarah Habens was the half sister of Henry Albray who married Charlotte Harvey, and Amelia Hardy is Charlotte's half sister. See what I mean? lol. Here are the only references I can find transcribed, so if someone has the time and inclination to see what is what with this, I would really appreciate it very much. 1881 Census Civil parish: Alverstoke County/Island: Hampshire Country: England Street address: 4 Bedford St Registration district: Alverstoke Sub-registration district: Alverstoke ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Household Members: Name Age Amelia Hardy 13 Charles Hardy 80 Civil parish: Alverstoke County/Island: Hampshire Country: England Street address: 4 Bedford Str Registration district: Alverstoke Sub-registration district: Alverstoke ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Household Members: Name Age Albert H. Can't help you Penny but I wonder what is was that made a lad born in Ropley leave that small village (even today) to join the Royal Navy? Mike Waterlooville

Very many thanks to everyone who replied on and off list with regards this query. I'm very happy to say that the address is 120 percent definitely Russel Place. Once again thanks to everyone who replied, but especially to two listers who were able to confirm it from street maps of Fareham. Kindest regards to all, Jon

Russell Place exists, but is not within the district as described in the census. The district the family are at runs eastwards on the south side of West Street, starting at Portland Place, and bounded by the sea (Fareham Creek I suppose). Russell Place is on the north side of West Street, and to the west of the described district. The confusion over the street name is because the 'p' in the middle has been interpreted as if it could be an old fashioned 'ss', written 'fs', and the final letter is also ambiguous, though not obviously 'll'. Hi everyone, I have had slightly conflicting info sent me from a number of people regarding the address of George Allbray and his family in Fareham on the 1851 census. The majority say the address is 119 Russell Place, but I have also had suggested to me Rupet Place. Is there anyone on the list with a good knowledge of Fareham that could tell me if a Rupet Place ever existed please? I have tried googling for info, and there are a lot of hits for Russell Place, but apart from info I have on my website, no other mention of Rupet Place can be found. This doesn't mean that it never existed of course, just that I'm the only person to include it on the net .....yeah right eh? Gutt feelings are that it is Russell, but I was sent info some time ago that said that Rupet Place was between East St and West St. Could someone possibly help clear this matter up for me? Many thanks for any help that can be given, kindest regards to all as always, Jon

Good morning, Some time ago there was a letter showing a website where one could find the day of the week when someone was born, married etc. I have inadvertently wiped if off my computer. Would someone who has kept it mind sending it to me please? Many thanks, Joan.
