Thank you Elves I am very grateful. I will have to get a copy. Do you know of any good sites that would contain information of wills. Sarah Middleton wrote >I don't know the name of Jane SIMMONDS father, so am stuck with my >SIMMONDS branch. Have you not been able to find her birth in the GRO indexes. Obviously, her having been born in London or Portsmouth or Sussex rather complicates the issue, but hopefully there wouldn't be too many possibilities. If her birthday is given consistently as 1852 in the censuses, then it is more than likely that she was born in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th quarters of 1851 or the first quarter of 1852. If you can find her birth and get a Certificate, you will probably get her father's name - less likely if she was illegitimate. By the way, when you say you can't find a record of her marriage in the GRO indices, where have you been looking? I recently found no record of a marriage when looking at the relevant GRO index image on Ancestry, but then went to Findmyfamily and *did* find it! -- Jenny M Benson
Good morning, Searching for Elizabeth Anne McGREGOR married Ernest V. MOGG December 1/4, 1915, Portsmouth. They had 2 children: Robina & Jean (I think). Elizabeth's parents: James McGREGOR & Abigail Ann MONTGOMERY. Any information most welcome. Regards, Joan. Sydney, Australia.
I am new to this list. I am looking for information about Henry READ of Portsea, shipwright, my gr gr gr gr grandfather. In a 1794 Marriage Licence Allegation, Henry READ gave his consent for his daughter Elizabeth READ of Portsea (born abt 1775 or 1774), a minor, to marry Joseph GRIGG, baker, of Alverstoke aged 21. Elizabeth READ was my gr gr gr grandmother and Joseph GRIGG was my gr gr gr grandfather. In 1841 census Joseph and Elizabeth GRIGG were operating confectionery shop in High Street Gosport. In 1851 census, Elizabeth was a widow aged 77 still operating pastrycook and confectionery shop at 54 High St, Gosport. The shop continued until after 1870 - does anyone have a photo? I am wondering if this is the same Henry READ, of Portsea, shipwright who made a will dated 1816 listed in Hampshire Record Office? I am hoping someone might have access to a burial record which would give his age? I'd greatly appreciate any information. Hi Santa (or any of his little helpers out there!) I have only one family in Hampshire, but they are proving a bit of a brick wall for me. My gt-gt-grandfather was (Henry) John Samuel MIDLANE - he used various combinations of those first names through his life, but was registered John Samuel MIDLANE when he was born in 1848 in Portsea. He married a Jane Emily SIMMONDS (who was born about 1852), and she is the one proving difficult. I have not been able to find their marriage, although I have searched the GRO index under both his and her names. Their first child was my gt-grandmother, Rosina Alice MIDLANE, and she was born in Derby in 1872. I have the family on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, where Jane Emily states that she was born in London, Middlesex on two of them, and Portsmouth, Sussex on the other. I have a possible Jane SIMMONDS (with family) and a possible Henry MIDLANE on the 1871 census, both unmarried. There is a Jane Emily SIMMONDS in Portsea who married someone else in 1870, which threw me for a while. I don't know the name of Jane SIMMONDS father, so am stuck with my SIMMONDS branch. If anyone can help me find this marriage, I would be most grateful! Sarah
Hello Bob, Could this be your Thomas Hollis ? Deaths, Jun Qtr. 1861 Portsea Vol 2b Page 232 Before 1865 no age at death is shown, so to be certain you would have to buy the Cert. unless maybe someone can find more details of a burial? I will send image of the entry direct. Regards from your ever helpful Hampshire Elves.
I should like any information about the ancestry or origins of WILLIAM VOYSEY or FOISEY, born about 1785, married 1811 to Jane Wilkes at Wymering, died 1830 Buckland. I'm afraid even Santa may have difficulty with this one, but it's worth a try. I am very new to this group, but would also like a present from Santa. I'd like to have any information on the family of Frederick Henry Saunders (b 1876 Henfield , Sussex) and Alice Saunders born Lewis (b. 1878 Great Malvern Worcestershire) besides their marriage date and the information found on the 1901 census. They lived on Melville Road, Gosport in 1901 and on Bevis Square, Gosport in 1905. He was with the Royal Irish Rifles in 1901, and later a motor car dealer. Three of their children, Rose (b1902 Gosport), Winifred Maude (b.1905 Gosport ) and Nellie Amelia (b.1907 Gosport) left England in the 1920's for Canada and the U.S. Perhaps a brother (Ernest Allen b. 1900 Gosport) did also. I cannot seem to pin down the records of the Frederick Henry's Saunders' or Alice's Lewis' deaths, as the are not uncommon names, nor can I find anything on Alice Lewis in Worcestershire, where she claims on the 1901 census to have been born. I also know that her father's name was George Lewis, listed as a caretaker on their marriage certificate. I can find a lot about the ancestry of George Frederick Saunders, but Alice Lewis is my brick wall. I also know nothing about what happened to the family after 1901, but for the three girls that left for North America. Thank you, Jean

Hi Bob, Just because he wasn't recorded as deceased didn't mean he was alive. For just one example, my wife's 2xgreat grandfather died in 1854, his daughter married in 1868, and her father was not recorded as deceased. It greatly depended if the bride or groom were asked if their father had died, or possibly, and this could be the case for your family, may have been asked, but didn't know because, as you say, he appears to be working in Sussex away from home. All the best, Jon

Here are my wishes What happened to my Great Grandfather Stephen Henry (or sometimes known as Henry Stephen)NEWELL last heard of in the 1881 census listed living and working at St Johns College Hirstpierpoint Sussex as head baker. His Mary strangely listed as a Seaman's wife and children were living in 18 Arnaud St Portsea. The last known date is on his sons marriage certificate in 1898 and is not listed as deceased. Second wish is Death of Thomas HOLLIS b 1816 IOW Last date know is 1861 Census and as his wife was listed as a Widow in the 1871 census he died between these dates but no listing found. There is no listing of him in Kingston Cemetery. His first wife was buried in Mile End Cemetery but would his second wife have laid him next to her. Regards Bob

Is there SKP who would be able to look up the baptism record of William Crossland? This occurred at St Thomas, Portsmouth on 21st September 1802. I would like to know if there is some information about his father's occupation or anything else. Crossing my fingers, thanks, Di

Hi Jan. Yes I have that fellow but mine would have been approx. 36 years. I have checked this one out, but alas his father and family do not co-incide at all. If anyone is interested in the WJH you mention herein, I can pass on what I have found. So the search for death/burial still goes on for my William James Hellyer (1854-c1893). Thank you Jan.
