    1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Alfred BARTLETT
    2. Pam Perryman
    3. Thanks Jenny and Cynthia -- that's the right Bartlett family on Arundel St., Portsmouth, in 1901. I'd be most grateful for the image. For some reason they weren't coming up on the National Archives list. The Portsmouth listing matches the 1891 entry, same kids, same occupation. The Hodges family was into the food business in one form or another. I think Maggie probably married one of her father's bakers. He was a confectioner with a fairly large establishment at Hyde Park Corner, Portsea, before he retired. Thanks again! Pam Perryman Eugene, Oregon pam(at)bobwhitman(dot)com

    1. [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Letter to Santa - Sarah SHAW
    2. Rita Newton
    3. Hi Santa & Hampshire Elves I would love to find out more about a Sarah SHAW, she has twice appeared with my HINES family. First was when she registered the death of Richard Hines in 1848 " Sarah Shaw present at the death Wingfield Street Portsea". Richard was married and had 3 sons - so assumed this was a neighbour or friend who knew the ropes about registering deaths - saving his widow the "stress" of registering Richard's death. Amelia, Richard's widow, remarried in October 1850 to a Thomas ANCELL. Amelia's maiden name was LITTLEFIELD and she was born about 1812 in Portsea. Sarah SHAW then turns up living/staying with the married sister of Richard - Jane FRANKLIN (born 1819, Elson) in Hackney in the 1861 Census. Sarah Shaw is listed as "cousin" age 80, Widow, no occupation, born Elson. As Jane was born in 1819 and Sarah Shaw about 1780 - the "cousin" is a bit questionable. I am wondering whether Sarah is her aunt born in Donhead St Andrew, Wiltshire in 1776. Now - if any Hampshire Elves or Santa can give me any connections with the families mentioned it would be a fantastic Christmas pressy Thanks for reading this Santa. Rita Yes - I still belive in you.

Dauvin is not a name I have come across before, and initial searches seem to indicate a link with the Channel Islands. Usually, when someone was buried in the same grave it meant that there was a connection between those people, but this one has got me totally confused. I thought maybe Lilian was the daughter of Rhoda Scott, but I've not been able to find the her birth index as yet. Going by the age at death, Lilian would appear to have been born 1908, the same year Rhoda died. Are there any listers out there who are connected to the Dauvin family that have info on who Lilian Frances is please? > > Very many thanks in advance, Jon > Jon, it may be worth checking with the cemetery people whether the grave was in fact re-used. It is possible that there is no connection with the Dauvin family. I have several instances of this in the Portsmouth cemeteries. Cheers, Ian

    3. Hi Jon Don't get too hung up on the idea that people who shared a grave were related. It doesn't always apply. I have people in my family history who were buried along with up to 8 other individuals, none of whom were related. It depends on whether or not the grave was purchased and, if so, how long ago. Even if you bought a grave in perpetuity, you only really had it for about 90 years before it was "recycled". Good luck Ruth in Hampshire -------Original Message------- From: Jon Nixey Date: 09/12/2006 15:39:04 To: Rootsweb Portsmouth Gosport Subject: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Any connections out there to DAUVIN?

My genealogical Christmas Wish would be to discover more about my "early Pauls." At the top of my tree at the moment is John Paul from New Alresford, who was a Sawyer and died in 1767. His wife was named Elizabeth. For the next generation I have John Paul of New Alresford, born in 1707 and died in 1770. His wife was Susannah who died in 1765. I'd love to know more about their wives and whether they had any siblings and it would be great to get back another generation or two. My other wish is to discover anything about the mysterious Tryphosa Allbury. She apparently married James Paul (son of John Paul jnr above) in 1771. She is variously recorded as Rafosa or Raforia. As far as I know, she was the mother of his children, but James married a second time, to a widow named Ann Thatcher. -- Jenny M Benson

What sort of Certificate - Birth, Marriage or Death? I'm guessing you mean Birth or Death. In those cases you should get the Signature, description and residence of informant. With a Birth, this is usually one of the parents. With a death it may be a relative or some official . -- Jenny M Benson

    2. Pam Perryman
    3. Hello List, I’ve just found a marriage for a sister of my great grandfather. She is Margaret Fannie A[yers?] HODGES (b. 1866, 1st Q, Portsea) who married Alfred BARTLETT in 1890, 3rd Q, in Portsea. I found an Alfred BARTLETT (b.c1862, Portsmouth), Draper’s Shopkeeper in the 1901 census on the Natl. Archives website, but can’t find any 1901 entry that looks like his wife. I can check that further next week in the full (and free) 1901 census online at my local Family History Center. However, I noticed in the archives that there have been folks researching BARTLETT on this list. Does this marriage connect to anyone’s research? Love to hear from you if it does! I am looking for information about Henry READ of Portsea, shipwright, my gr gr gr gr grandfather. In a 1794 Marriage Licence Allegation, Henry READ gave his consent for his daughter Elizabeth READ of Portsea (born abt 1775 or 1774), a minor, to marry Joseph GRIGG, baker, of Alverstoke aged 21. Elizabeth READ was my gr gr gr grandmother and Joseph GRIGG was my gr gr gr grandfather. In 1841 census Joseph and Elizabeth GRIGG were operating confectionery shop in High Street Gosport. In 1851 census, Elizabeth was a widow aged 77 still operating pastrycook and confectionery shop at 54 High St, Gosport. The shop continued until after 1870 - does anyone have a photo? I am wondering if this is the same Henry READ, of Portsea, shipwright who made a will dated 1816 listed in Hampshire Record Office? I am hoping someone might have access to a burial record which would give his age? I'd greatly appreciate any information.
